Hi all , first post.
Have just installed a Mikuni kit, tri spark ignition and CNW coils with new NGKBP7ES plugs. Runs very sweet when it gets started.. but almost impossible to start without a serious injection of aerostart. Timing is good. Idles perfect when running. Stock 850 with 750 pipes and peashooter mufflers. Battery fully charged. Fuel flow to bowl OK, level looks OK. Plugs look dry even after 15 -20 kicks.. by then an angry man. Have contacted MAP cycles in the USA who supplied the carby kit but get to hear back.. driving me mad!!! any suggestiosn out there??
cheers

thanks for the response... choke is working.. when it does finally start.. clear that choke is on

G'day conkey, Firstly are you aware of how the Mik works. For the choke, you have a knob to pull up, or a cross over lever, to push down.
Mikunis' don't like too much throttle for the choke to work properly, If you are snapping the throttle open when kicking, then the choke won't work.
Also if you have tried to keep it running by setting the Idle quite high, then the choke wont work.
If it is still hard to start when warmed up, it might be a bit lean.
Leave the filter off while experimenting.
Has it run long enough to do a plug check. If you do have it Idling for a while, put a fan on in front, otherwise if it is lean it will get hot and blue up your pipes.
Of course you must check you timing, and be certain it is right.
Things can get difficult when changing a couple of things at the same time, but if aerostart is working then you'd think Carby.
34mm Mik ?
Do you know what Jets are in the Carby.
By turnig the Idle air mixture screw in (clockwise) you are enriching the mixture. If you started at.. 1 1/2 turns out, and by going in is helping then
you are probably a bit lean on the Idle jet.
If you can get it going, keep it going long enough to do a plug check.

oh yeh, welcome in to the fold, where are you, first advice is free, then we need pictures.
Check the slide cuttaway.

hi again.. have taken it for a reasonable length ride.. plug colour looks OK.. although everything seems to indicate fuel problems.. will keep trying , fiidling with idle mixture etc

I'm just "over the road" Aussie combat .. in perth. Sent a Andrew ? from the SA Norton club a DVD of a ride here.. you a member of that club?

will organise a photo when its going again.. angry at it at the moment

Yeah they're like women, they give you the shits sometimes, but then all is fogotten.
Was going to Club tonight to find a couple of other forum members, but got wet as a shag today and decided to stay
near the fire.

New Mikuni straight out of the box. Invariably the Pilot Jet is too small. Happens all the time and buggers starting and warm up running. See if a .35 or .40 Pilot is fitted, it works with the choke and as your plugs arn't even wet after 20 kicks, its pretty obvious there is little fuel gettting through the enricher passage. As a precaution, check to see if the needle is still in its retainer clip.

thanks for the reply, will pull out the piloy jet today and check.. they did send some spares... funny thing though that someone might be able to explain.. choke on,no throtle .. wont start..... turn choke on and off maybe ten times.. leave choke on.. will start first kick. that make sense to anyone

Conkey? Perth? Norton ride? So, that would be you Greg. Welcome. I'll drop in next time I'm down and have a look. It will be in the next few weeks.
See you then.

ps Tell 'em how nice my bike is to ride!

yes fullautotechnolgies..greg from Boya is right.. bought the mikuni/trispark and CNW coil pack after riding your Norton.. certainly runs a lot sweeter.. when it starts that is.. still working on the solution to that.. bit odd.. about to pull out the jets for a look see.. and yes those out there.. his Norton is sweet.. recommend the head

The 2011 Norton owners ride will be on Sept 18.. can you make it??

Greg, I'm actually coming down on the Norton on Saturday morning (need a couple of new tyres!) so if you're around I'll catch you on Saturday arvo and have a look at your carb.
See ya then.

ps I hate it when my Norton won't strat either.
