Is there a such thing as a Norton Font that can be found in some print type book or program? I'm trying to make a sign for the INOA Rally.
Thanks

In this vein, is there a font style for the numbers stamped in the headstock plate, engine and transmission?

Bill.

Hm good question Bill as my Peel's Maney cases needs the serial numbers stamped in to fool authorities.

Thanks lads for finding this font.
It will come in handy for setting branch items.
Just wish I had it when I was doing the NOC calendar.
Cheers Don

I have no intention of even trying to fool anyone; just want all the parts to look like they belong on the same motorcycle.

Last week I purchased a '72 with matching numbers, the headstock plate got pretty well eaten by the clutch cable and the motorcycle came with a new, unstamped plate and a set of scrivits. The Commando also came with a unencumbered Massachusetts title, and here in the bluest state that's no small feat.

So the question stands; I'd sincerely appreciate knowing what font or type size the factory used. And the original plate will be given to the next owner.

Bill.

Great question
Would like to know this as well. The stamped date at top of the plate appears to be 1/4 inch but the font is more open that I have found (the botton of the 9 and 3 do not curl up), The bottom frame numbers appear to be smaller and more conventional. Been looking around but have not found a good match for the top date numbers.

That's funny, my APR 1969 has the curled bottoms and tops of the 9 and 6 both, plus my 3 has the flat topped version. Probably depended on where they bought the stamp set last. I took my plate to a jeweler and had them engrave it with a similar font, I kept messing up the stamps.

Looking at AZScott's data tag I noticed that the fonts are different than the ones on my recently purchased '72, which do match the fonts on the '72 that I finished a few years ago, both '72s have April 72 manufacturing information. Neither AZs, or my 72s match the '75 Mk3 that is waiting for some attention, so I'm not sure it really matters which 1/4" font you use as long as its close. I will say that I dug through the entire Google listing of font images and did not see a match to the fonts on the '72s.

I'm going to stamp my new plate, but carry the old plate and tell it like it is, if necessary. I doubt that my new purchase was ever stolen, the Mass DOT runs the numbers before they issue a title and run the numbers again when a new title is applied for. Sidebar: I went to title my '67 Royal Interceptor, its serial number is 414, the MA DOT got upset when they found a trailer with the same VIN, when I pointed out that a trailer and a motorcycle wouldn't be too difficult to discern they processed my application.

On to something else to worry about...

Bill.

DogT & Roadscholar, thanks for your posts. Doesn't sound like there may have been an official stamp configuration. Good to know.
I am less concerned now, will keep the original plate in a safe place and come up with a reasonable duplicate. Also found that using a thick gasket material on a steal anvil and giving it a crisp rap gives the numbers the correct depth. I experimented around with several things. I do like the idea of finding an engraver, and will look around here for one. Thanks again.

Was your engraver able to give the plate's numbers proper depth?

 Our bureaucracy at its finest!

I wish I had that font last week when I had the old girl in our annual Vintage Bike Show. Next year...
