Hi,

I bought this commando with a Norvil front disk on it (please see attached picture) and Nissin 4 pot master cylinder, works great but the disk rattles and clatters enough to drive a deaf man insane! Seems the disk really is floating about. Hub is worn (splins have a little radial play, but not excessive?) and the disk seems to pick up the pads and rattle them in the caliper even through there is the normal anti rattle spring.

I will bin the Norvil disk and hub if I can't stop this noise, anyone had any experience with this set up?

Thanks

Noisy front disk - driving me nuts!

I bought a Norvil disc from Mick Hemmings last year and it's been great. It comes with a dish which fits in between the disc and hub. It compresses slightly on assembly and allows the disc to centralise under brake pad pressure but otherwise the disc does not move radially or laterally. Maybe you need a new dish?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, There is a sort of dust shield between the disk and hub but nothing soft which could compress to act as a damper but still allow alignment - good thought though, I'll have a closer look.

'Dust shield' could be the part I'm talking about. It isn't soft, it's pressed steel and should be slightly proud of the hub before tightening the disc down. It remains 'sprung' in use. Mick described the Norvil disc to me as semi-floating i.e it only moves under braking pressure and there should be no free play between disc and the toothed carrier.

perhaps your disc is no longer true, heat and time has developed high spots

got anyone locally to true it for you, I took mine to Midas brakes and then did in very quickly

Guys thanks for the replies,

Well sort of all right! The plate/dust cover has no srping against the disk not sure why but I found some car door protector strip sort of rubbery U shaped profile in a draw, this I pushed over the edge of the plate and it sort of pushed against the disk a little as I tighten up the 4 disk retaining spacers (you can see them in the picture) this killed the rattle immediately and the brake works as before, so a done job - gosh that was an easy fix :D

While I had the wheel off, I thought I would check the static balance (read here somewhere that I should do it) and found I needed 40 gm (1 1/2 oz) to get the wheel steady in any position - rather surprised. Went for a quick blast to check the brake and balance - amasing difference front steady as a rock at 70, the vibs on the front end have disappeared and ----------no more rattle - double whammy!!

Once again forum to the rescue - great stiff really appreciated!!
