71 starts and idles perfectly. Put in gear and take off Cutts out bad.80 mile ride Sunday no problem .electric seems to check out .no water in fuel.check floats next?new floats and needles.thx

So under load, it was bogging down, but then it was good for the 80 miles?

Points. Ran a little shitty Sunday smoothed out after about 2 miles. Tried to ride to work Tuesday turned around after 1/2MILE barely made it home. Idk.

Well,... aren't points awesome?? My 69 Ford has run like shit for years. I blamed the carb and rebuilt it 2 times, still thinking that maybe the carb's ports are worn out and new components can't fix it. It had points that I carefully set up many times. Eventually I saw these pertronix points replacement Electronic ignition on sale for $67. and I broke down and bought it. My Ford purrs like a kitten now... Points suck,... I don't go in for keeping them on the bike if you're going to ride it. If you have a museum bike, then keep them. If you have a rider, buy an EI of some kind and keep the parts for your points in a bag in your parts bin (like everyone else does)

I would need to look at a set of points to remember exactly, but under at least one screw on each set of points is an insulating washer. I had one that was cracked and apparently was allowing the point set to ground out under load. It took me quite a while to find this.

What's it doing misfiring, surging, running on one pot?

In addition to what's been suggested already, things that spring to mind..

Replace plugs
Check HT & LT leads are secure
Check the filler cap vent isn't blocked.
If you were on the main tap, switch to reserve and see if it runs any better, or remove the fuel pipes and make sure fuel flows.
Points capacitors
Bad engine earth
Worn ignition or kill switch.
Choke cable snapped

Cheers,

cliffa
