Anyone try a wosp lms843 starter motor for mk3 commando. They are selling on ebay for 199 including shipping. Could be a good deal.

why not just spring for the dyno dave well proven starter?

I am just trying to see if anyone in the forum has tried the starter. No one wants to be the first. Kind of like buying an India made gas tank.

baldy
I have just bought one of these WOSP starter motors from Phoenix Marine after my second Hi Torque Dyno Dave type from Norvil started losing power and become quite noisy. The windings had corroded badly and come apart, this unit having replaced one which somehow became a high speed electric motor and exploded on a routine start during a trip to Spain in 2013. The righthand spark plug blew out the day after but with the help of friends and a hilly environment to start the engine, I wedged the plug in place with a combi wrench and fencing wire to continue our tour and make the 600+ miles back home OK.

The recent starter wasn,t rebuildable as the pinion has worn and although the small O.E. idler gear still looked OK, I ordered a new one from AN. The rest of the O.E. geartrain is fine.
I would say the mileage was around 10,000+ miles on my e start only Mk3 using the recommended 200cc 20w 50 mineral primary lube so hope the WOSP starter lasts longer.

The WOSP unit is made in the UK and uses the same (Hitachi?) base unit with the alloy adapter plate as the earlier versions.
The through bolts are M6 rather than M5 and have machined alloy spacers between the endplates so they can,t be overtightened.
General impression is a very good build quality and very similar in appearance to the previous units
Fitted it last weekend and it fired up instantly and much quieter due to new pinion and gear, but still noisier than my rebuilt Prestolite. I have only done around 350 miles but am off to Sicily next week and will update on anything worth reporting, but to be honest, I,m more worried about the sprag and have spares and tools to replace these en route as required.
If you can get one at the US price I would go for it, RGM have the old style Hi Torque starters priced at £415 + postage + 20%vat for eurozone buyers, close to £500 delivered and Holland Norton Works are similar. No idea where these sellers or Norvil get their units from, or where they,re made.

Deceptive advertising??? Bet it is NOT a gear reduction!
Pix show an absolute theft of my design. Detail changes only.
Limited Life time warranty except for sprag lock-up blow-up...?
Worth something in the USA-Canada, though the number of returns are exceptionally small.
Now 1150+ sold

exploded on a routine start during a trip to Spain in 2013

I'm sure WOSP will blow up also on sprag lockups, None of these will stand up to 45,000rpm
copied in England...(china parts) If it was real Nippondenso parts it would cost a LOT more.
345 GBP in England... yet $199 in USA?

Looks like WOSP are also copying my friends car starter design...that I gave him and he started producing in around 1985. 5 years before WOSP !
My freind and I came up with my starter 06-4791B (showing it was not a "norton" part) in 2004 and the price was suggested by the members of the norton.com forum and has not change or gone up since then. That was the last published price for the prestolite product when they terminated the product.

good luck

after seeing a picture from the link below my post i doubt it is a gear reduction unless it has a planetary system in line which i doubt also. i, like you at the US $199.00 price it is more likely made with china junk.

Great starter fitted for my 2 MK 111 models. Thankyou Dave , and I would never purchase a Chinese made knock- off one. Plastic forks and knives yes.

Looks like kiwiniell is the first to try the starter with good results so far. My mk3 will not start cold with a dyno Dave starter. I am not sure it ever did since I did not install it. I found the stator was melted down and replaced with a new one but it did not fix. The dyno Dave starter spins super when the bike is warm. I agree with Dave that the wosp is similar to his starter.

my original starter rebuilt with four brushes etc, has worked fine for years. I have no kicker or kicker shaft. It was in the way of the Hyde rear sets.

Changed the stator from the alternator? Starters don't have stators!

I have always emphasised that a real problem is in fact the charging system. Since the small Atlas battery, the regular commando battery and the specified HiPo Yasusa E-start battery and its AGM equivalent all will start the MKIII and spin it quite well. However the single phase 180 watt...depending on the style of driving and rear sprocket size has been proven to be a real killer for starter performance. This effect does not matter if it is a 2 brush or 4 brush prestolite or CNW prestolite clone or my starter. I found this out with a new battery and a NOS prestolite starter and the slower turning 21T rear sprocket. Throw the battery on a real garage charger and it would start up great even in the 40 deg cold with 50w oil.
Since it seems few listen to what I have to say, only some put the recommended 3 phase 180/210watt system to help out with the constantly undercharged battery. Then guess what, it only cranks kind of mediocre or if warm. Eventually even a huge battery will lower it's output. How many people don't even know that a good battery is 12.8v. It should show around 13.25 right after shutting down from a ride for an hour or more...before it settles on 12.8.
If your battery is 12.7, 12.6 or 12.5 then it is not up to the task IMO

I'm using the starter in question. The 'original' starter has more rigidity against the idler gear whereas the 'aftermarkets' are not supported in the outer case and can push away leading to stripped gears and horrible noises when the gears don't mesh.

Hmmm...

I have 2 DynoDave starters...going on 5 years with no issues...starter has been flawless...1 of the starters is the chrome version as I like shinny
One of my favorite mods on the MKIII.
Thanks Dave for making this available to the bad knees community

I have had a Dyno Dave starter for around 8 to 10 years on a tuned hi comp mk3 and it has always startyed. except when spragg blew, replaced with a second hand m14tooth a mate gave me and still going...

I've been using a Dyno Dave starter for quite a few years now, first on one MK3 and later switched to another one. Never a problem.

Hot dang , my DD starter will also not spin up the motor when cold out. Simply spins so fast that the sprag does not engage. Warm day no problem. It's a fast spinning starter for sure but being in a colder climate like Canada I will soon have to rethink the starter choice here up north. At present this limits my riding to our 3 1/2 warmest riding months. I'm going to fit a Prestolite 4-brush H-D upgraded one and see if this corrects the issue , at the end of this riding season. That and with an 18 tooth sprag to see how it works out. More work.
