I just checked mine and you are on the right track.
The spring top fits into the hole shown and runs down on the inside of the frame stand mount plates.
I see the issue of getting the spring hook into the hole!

that's all it took

the spring hook was just a bit long-- linked into the hole as you described it went in just fine, bob.

nothing else to do on this except better fork seals sometime and ride it while the weather holds.

well, i tried the 220 main jets in these carbs, no go. too rich on full throttle, motorboats and accelerates sluggishly, then improves if i roll back to the needles,

my 1970 repair manual says that the motor used "180s with restricted mufflers," 210s with modified megaphone," and 220s with early megaphonemufflers."

i have peashooter mufflers, so i'm gong to stick the 200s back in and see how that works.

Kevin, Sorry about the 220 recommendation. Now that I think of it, I have dunstall decibel mufflers on my commando, which are less restrictive than pea shooters. I just forgot that aspect effects jet sizing... My mistake, I'm sorry about that.

The bike's lookin' good. Have you noticed that the centerstand is just barely long enough? I usually throw a piece of 1/4" plywood on the ground where it's parked.

no, that's absolutey not an issue. the only way to learn something new is to try something new. now i've tested the jets and know where i am.

the centerstand does work, but its clear that the design could be improved, which it was, of course, that same year.

i have to do something to the sidestand, though. i got the kit from andover, and while everything fits well, the stand stows up where i can't reach it with my foot when stopped. holding the bike up with one hand while i fish around for the stand with the other will cause a drop sooner or later. i'll need to weld a piece of rod on, probably, like the later stands have.

Looks like some welding is about to occur. My 70 fell over once from having no proper feet on it so I removed it completely way back when. :(

i can cut a section off a quarter-inch steel nail and tack that to the sidestand foot. all i need is something that sticks out beyond the exhaust pipes a bit.

There's supposed to be a spring that extends that tab off the center stand, but I've never been able to get mine on. I don't have any problem finding the thing, but I rarely do it sitting on the bike, but I have. But then I've got the S pipes. That may make a big diff.

I dont suppose your painter wrote down the formula to the paint while he was mixing it up did he?
Mine is an S and is supposed to be this color and I dont have any original paint to get it matched too.
Is tour '70 Roadster purple with serial number 137706 ?

I am still searching for m the Commando I bought new in 1970. Serial number 137706. Even my wife wants it back @!

Hey, just saw your post. I didn't ask him for the paint codes, I picked up a nos side cover out of NZ I think and my guy matched it. I don't have any use for that cover if you want to buy it and match off if that.
That is just what my 1st Commando looked like. It was a real beauty like this one. Bought it new in '70. As I have stated before, wife even says if I find it again, buy it !!

I have been doing some parts swapping with my other '70 commando. I am trying to make one real nice/stock and the other one will be a nice rider/cafe machine.
