I don't have a problem at the moment !!!!!!!!. And maybe this has been discussed before.
Are new slides available that are made of a different metal from the carbs. I think I remember reading something about this. My concern being that I have already had a slide lose a 6mm x 6mm section out of the front edge of a slide and shoot safely through the engine taking out a spark plug at the same time. I remember just 100 miles or so before it happened, I could feel a resistance when opening the throttle. That feeling occurred to me again when riding down to Hampton Downs last Sunday. Bugger.

You need new carbs. Replacing with chrome covered is too late if slides fractured ,then bores are shot too. Try Premier$. Spendo time.

I have had my slides gall and stick in the open position. I was able to clean the bores with some Scotch Brite and the bores were still okay. My carburetors only had 8000 miles at that time.

There are two different types of slides that are available and both are off a different alloy than the carburetor bodies. One is from Amal itself, the slide is made from aluminum and then is anodized. The other is made from brass and is hard chromed. I had purchased brass slides from Clubman Racing Accessories but to fit them I needed to polish the edges of the needle clips so that they would seat properly in the slides. The slides work fine however, I noticed that after around 3000 miles the hard chroming is actually starting to wear away. So maybe the anodized aluminum slides from Amal Carburetors are the way to go.

I have some #3 1/2 anodized slides if you need them. I also have Pack 136 Premiers in stock for an 850. PM me if you need a quote.

No way would I put chromed slides in my Amals. If it peels off?? Either get the anodized ones, have them re-sleeved with SS or buy the new premium. Premium is the way to go if you need new parts, by the time you rebuild and re-sleeve, you've spent the same and the premiums have some advantages over the old ones. They still look the same too.

That just means the recipient hasn't readit yet.

Just turn down the diecast zinc slides and fit stainless sleeves to them. You'll get a perfect fit, and they'll last forever.

That been a thought on my mind but the work involved seems daunting. I would think having some form of tool that could carefully hone the bore straight first would be the go.,, but is there a tool around like that. Remember there is a recessed section of the carb body that the slide "plugs into' at the front. I have also seen copper sleeves made for the slides [ and seen them come loose ].
Its like the guy 40 odd years ago who proudly told us he pressed out a buggered sleeve from an old Pioneer chainsaw, pressed a good sleeve from another barrel that had munted fins and flange, and fitted the good sleeve to the good barrel. My boss at the time just shook his head.
Quite honestly, I would rather just pay the $500.00 odd dollars for a pair of carbs and use the time to ride. At the moment I still have a wee family to support and that $500.00 has got another few items to buy first.
The stainless type sleeve is a good idea though, but the better idea is the one used in the SU carb. The SU carb idea on an Amal would probably never wear out.
