New Project??

So as the Norton is wrapping up, I'm already anxious for another project. In reality I should be getting a modern bike, and I may, but I just love working on old bikes. So my thoughts have been drifting towards older BMW's and Moto Guzzi's and such. I know both bikes are well built and reliable and I like the looks if done right. I will be doing more homework on these bikes, but in the meantime I was just curious if anybody has anything to say, good or bad, about these bikes.

I want to be prepared to jump (or not jump) if something should pop up on craigslist in my area. Really there are tons of classic bikes I would love to have, but a Moto Guzzi keeps sticking in my head for some reason.

Just looking for thoughts or comments.

Thanks,
Ben

One of the things that makes the Commando fun to work on is the availability of parts and upgrades. I don't know what it is like getting pieces for a Guzzi. Seems like it would be worth looking at availability and prices of bits.

Yeah, parts availability is a big check on the list. Even in the short time that I've been looking I'm finding BMW's are much more common. I actually found a couple within reach (financially and location wise). It sure is fun looking for new projects.

I hope someone realises that a Guzzi convert is an automatic !!

BMWs generally require an enormous amount of special tools to do any serious work on - a local owners club may have them to borrow or hire, otherwise can be very expensive - or you will get to know the local BM mechanic quite well - and have a good idea of how wealthy he is...

I have friends with BMW's. Typical German engineering. Changing the clutch uses a host of special tools and hours and hours of labor. They do run for a long time, but when they go, watch out$$$$$$

If you buy a Guzzi, the FIRST thing you do is buy a copy of the "Guzziology" book as it will tell you what fits what.

I can comment on the vintage BMW thing, parts are easily available (notice I did not use the word "cheap") and there are special tools for rent (Ed Korn). the owners club situation is good! (www.boxerworks.com and www.vintagebmw.org have good owners forums just full of helpful folks).
