Hi All

Well my 850 Noton Wideline Featherbed is on the road and going great, now need a new project to keep me out of trouble, have just gone to look at a 1960 650SS Norton Slimline Featherbed, its all pulled apart but everthink is there, I have known the owner for many years and run into him at a party last week, he asked me if I was intrested in it as he knows I'm a Norton freak and want it to go to a good home, he broke his neck a few years ago and not intrested in getting on a bike now, he gave it to me realy cheap so couldn't knock it back...

Has a 5 gallon alloy tank (new never been on the bike), Bennett alloy rims, alloy oil tank, high comp pistons, all motor parts are in good condidtion (just needs to be reassenbled), Roadholder front end has been rebuilt and gear box is all together, the only thing missing is the seat, for $1,500 au I can't go wrong...

Will build it as a caferacer but for road use, my yongest daugther who is bike crazy like myself she is 13 years old so will be a good bike for her when she is old enough to get her licence, she has been into dirt bikes sense she was 9 years old and is a natual on the bikes...

I will post some pics when I get the bike home next weekend...

All the best and safe riding

sweet..... post some pics when u get a chance, we love photos! sounds like u got a damn cheap bike if its all there like u say, wish it was mine :)

If you decide to change directions on the alloy gas tank that fits the slimline frame, I might be interested...

Ditto Jean's comment!!! I really want to build some featherbed framed Norton. I want to stick with a Norton motor as I know I'm not skilled enough to do a good job of putting a Square four or something in it and I love the look of Norton motors. I love the timing covers with the round Norton emblems centared in them. They have that wheel base that just looks like they would handle so well. I remember as a kid with my first Commando, I used to ride by a local college parking lot because there was someone who often parked an amazing Atlas based caferacer there. I can't find my pictures of it sadly. Maybe it's my glammed up memories but I remember it as a really cool looking clean bike. Lots of nickel & black enamel paint... Wish I knew the owner.

Hi all

Well now I have a peigon pair now, a 850 Wideline and now a 650 Slinline Featherbed frame, thanks Grandpual but I will be using the alloy tank on the Slimline, I just wished it would have fitted the Wideline frame as the Wideline only has a 3 gallon tank on it and the 850 likes the taste of fuel and thanks Jean I had a good chukkle when I seen your response as I see you are also a lover of the Featherbed frame...

As for the 650SS I had a good look at all the parts yesturday and the motor seems to be in great condisition, don't know yet why the motor was pulled down as the bores look good no lip as well the crank jonals have no wear marks, but will get more imfo next weekend when I pick it up...

Thanks again to all

Ashley, Have you been taking lessons from Hobot? I think I can discern the meaning of 'condisition' but a 'peigon pair' has me completely stumped!

I mean I will own a Wideline and a Slimline Featherbed framed Norton, not perfect matched as the wideline has a hot 850 in it and the slimline will have the baby 650 but both will handle the same, but the slimeline is going to be built as a caferacer, my 850 is for cruising now as I'm a lot older and wiser, only time will tell...

Hi All

Well picked up the new project bike today, big problem, Dennis the bloke I brought it off pulled the motor apart about 15 years ago and when we were getting all the part out and loading on my truck we couldn't find the head for it, the push rods and carbies are there but no sign of the head, he handed me back $500 strait away and said if he finds it I just give him the $500 back but I'm not holding my breath, still I think I'm still way ahead for $1000...

Will post pics in the next few days as well if anyone has a spare head for a 1960 650ss they want to sell let me know...

Ashley

I think the head I have might be identified as a Dominator head; I have to look closely and then research any possible differences.

Hi All

Have done some reseach on the engine numbers and it is a 1961 650SS, I still haven't been able to source a head for it yet, have found a few Atlas 750 heads but none for the 650SS, I have a few opitions up my sleeve at the moment, thinking about building up 750 Atlas or Commando engine for it, I will keep the 650 motor and jusk keep looking for a head for it...

Another way I can go is to build up a rolling chassie and when I want to do some road racing all I have to do is unbolt my complete 850 motor and gear box out of my 1957 Wideline Featherbed frame and lift it into the Slimeline using the same engine mounts, I have built this bike in a way that all I have to do is unbolt the engine mounts from the frame, lift the whole engine, gear box and primary with mounts still attached and put strait into the Slimline frame and could do this in less than 2 hours work, as well I would run the same rego on both bikes...

But its only a throught that keeps popping in my head at the moment, I have pleanty of time to decide...

Not sure if this would work with vlve size etc., but years back I had the top of a set of Atlas cylinders machined flat and used a Commando head with a copper gasket.

Hi All

I have decided to build this bike with a Atlas motor for the time being, I will keep the 650SS motor as it is hard to chase up a head for it and one will turn up one day, but in the mean time I will look for a complete Atlas motor, so if anyony has a Atlas motor they want to sell, I just need the motor and nothing else as it will have a belt drive and I already have a gear box for it, don't matter if the mortor is going or not...
