I have not been happy with the Smiths Speedo on my new Trident Special as the gearing is wrong and the reading vague and inaccurate ~
So after much research I bought a electronic GPS ~ yep ~ GPS Speedo ~ from Speed Hut.
I guess most have heard of boats using these but I have never considering the application to a motorcycle ~
I found a site in the USA that offers a great range ` and can be tailored to suit your specifications ~ including numerals , needles and colour ranges.
The challenge is that they state emphatically that their instruments are negative earth ! Additionally they say they are not water proof but are shower proof~ ?
(So I will simply carry a plastic bag and a elastic band ~ )
Hopefully competitors or these folks will build them as water proof as more motorcyclists request the same!
So after much debate the issue was down to these options.
- Change the polarity ~ to negative - This can be achieved with the aid of the Tri-Spark reg/ rectifier conversion. Although having spoken with Steve Kelly about this issue, Steve is not a keen advocate of reversing the polarity despite his offering diagrams for positive and negative earth for the Tri-Spark ignitions.)
- Run an insulated circuit with an a inverter or relayed circuit .
The latter was the one I have gone with, after a electronics expert and biker in Australia offered to build me a suitable electronics unit to fit in the back of the instrument pod.
So FINALLY I got the new GPS driven Speedo fitted up and tested it over the last several weeks ~
Excellent ~ Once it loads for the first time , there after it boots within a second of ignition.
The digital reads .. Compass bearing, kilometres, trip, standing quarter and 0-100, highest achieved Speed , among others ~
The thing is steady and no fluctuations ~ the 'chosen ' cobalt blue dash light is excellent ~
Okay . purely optemistic on the speed range, but the original Trident Smiths Speedo displays 150 MPH and this is as close a conversion as practial ~
Another effective bling ~ (and the Original-nazis roll over again in horror ! )
