Morning all.

Just joined the forum, after a while as an observer. I'm in Cardiff, Wales and the proud owner of a 1973 Commando 850.

New member introduction

It's my first proper "Classic" bike and I'm a real beginner with the spanners, so I'll probably be on here asking for help before too long. This looks like a great site with lots of good ideas, help and enthusiasm.

Welcome !!!! Nice clean bike. :-) Grab the wrenches and join the addiction/ obsesion that is norton ;-)

Welcome, very nice looking Norton, like the front brakes, you won't have much troubles with the 850, keep up with the maintenance, I have owned mine for 36 years now and it has never let me down while on the road and if you do have any problems there is alway plenty of good folks here to help.

Very nice looking bike Ed, I have owned the same model since 1975. 1973 850 Interstate, was black same as yours but I re-painted it back in the late sevennties to silver. Now seeing yours I wish i'd done it black again!

Dave.

It's only clean because I took the photo soon after I got it :) I don't mind the servicing and fettling, but I'm not the most enthusiastic cleaner of a motorbike.

really beautiful Interstate

and you do know that the pristine cleanliness of one's Norton is a direct reflection of that person's character......

Nice. I like the front guard stays in black.
But then mine are too so .....:-)

Not so hot on the black fender stays but I do like your proper spark plug wire routing! Beautiful bike. Welcome.

Russ

Really nice Commando, enjoy.

Is that a steering damper I see?

Also do you have an anti-wetsump valve fitted? It looks like the same one I removed from my bike.

Hi Ed.Lazda
Welcome to the forum.
My Interstate is setup with the peashooters like yours. Nice Luggage rack? Who make that?
I like your front brake as well.
Cheers,
CNN

If your bike is unclean looking it means you have been to busy riding it and not enough time to clean, I'm not into polishing all the time, mine gets polished once a year on its birthday when I brought it new and road grim just shows its ridden and not sitting around, just enjoy what you have, I ride mine 6 days out of 7.

Hi guys -- I got the bike less than a year ago and haven't done anything major to it, so I can't answer all your questions.

Yes, it's got a steering damper. I wondered when I bought it whether that was trying to cover something up, but it's recommended by Les Emery (Norvil) as a solution to any tendency to weave.

The front brake is a Norvil, not sure if it's from Emery's shop or from one of the other places that also produce "genuine Norvil" parts.

I don't know who made the luggage rack.

I'm fairly (= almost totally) ignorant about anti-wet sump valves. I've just read a couple of threads and it seems to create strong opinions. How do I tell if I've got one? Is it the metal thing in the oil pipe just above the gearbox? Can I tell if it's one of the "safe" ones with the weak spring? The majority verdict seems to be that wet sumping is less of a problem than the valve.

AC, sorry, the tank isn't for sale -- except for a price so grossly inflated that your eyes would water enough to fill the tank :)

It's probably from Les.

Yes, it is almost certainly Norvil-as in: Norvil Motorcycles' "Norvil".

Mick Hemmings' Norvil parts are made to the original Norvil specifications as far as I know.

Very nice looking bike!

I would echo a previous post about your timing and carburetor settings, the headers look very discolored.

Happy riding!

Welcome and I would say you made a good decision on buying what looks like a well put togeather bike. Do check your Valve adjustment, timing etc. Those blue pipes would worry me too. PS. I like the black fender stays but I would paint the fenders black too. Just me. Hope your enjoying it.

Thanks for the advice. It's had a service since that photo was taken, so I hope it's OK now, but I will check. I was enjoying it until a different problem occurred -- new thread to follow shortly.
