where to start, somewhere around 1974 (i was 10) one of my older brothers friends, bought the only yellow JPN in cda, i think it was the gus kuhn model, i was playing outside with some friends and around the corner came this cool yellow bike with fairings and 2 headlights, i talked to my brothers friend for a bit about his new bike, and thought it ws amazing. fast forward 36+years. just before christmas i was called into the office to go over some important internet info with the owner of the company. we looked at 5 bikes on ebay, a triumph bobber, yeah whatever, a sportster rat bobber, ok, a JPN, I Hit the roof, lets look at the JPN, we looked at another hog, go back to the JPN,,, looked at some other bike, and i kept asking to go back to the JPN, i think i wet myself, what a cool bike, and the memory from 36 years was like it was yesterday. we watched lenos bike, and looked at some articles, i told Tim that if he bought the JPN my respect for him as a bike collector would go up a few notches. well the auction ended and that was it, untill yesterday. At noon he called me in againe and showed me an article on a jpn from the summer, asked me if i remembered the bike auction, i said of course, he said come with me, we went downstairs to another companies warehouse and in the back was this JPN, i thought oh wow this is too cool, and then he gives me the bike as a bonus for all the years of service, i was overwhelmed, i now own a nice driver JPN. today we got it started, here is the link, enjoy i know i will.

LOL!, worked your tail off for the surprise gift then some more to get that dream come true all warm inside. Wonderful event to mark. Looks like a UFO bike from dead on, very cool indeed. Maybe a bit more carb tickle or choke and cracked throttle for easier kicking may do the one kick trick.

Now that ... is too cool, and what a great boss !!! You''ve come to the right place (this forum) to get moocho info on "fettleing", and getting your JPN well sorted. I do LUV the looks of those "sheep in wolf's clothing" JPN replicas, congradulations !!! :D :D :D

Thx, hopefully this forum helps alot. so i tickled the carbs today at lunch till they were wet, no choke ( its parked in a warehose), and,............ it started first kick, after it caught i added some choke till it ran smooth, what a difference from yesterday. i have todays starting escapade on video as well will post tomorrow.

i need to find a steel barrery cover this one is glass, and does anyone know if the crossover tube on the exhaust is bright or black chrome?

YELLOW JPN? Never heard of it. They weren't all white? More information please!

Holy Smokes! Where do you work? We will all want to apply.

Russ

I remember the bike as being a yellow norton, which i have found out from my brother to be the Gus Kuhn model. as to weather it was a yellow JPN is unclear. the bike was on display at the reynolds museum in wetaskiwin alberta when they had its tribute to motorcycles a few years back. i will try and dig up a photo.

Welcome,... I hope you appreciate what you've got. If that bike is a good rideable thing, it's worth $15000 + in OZ.... Lucky bastidooo..AC. Also hope you have a good sence of hoomer...AC.

i have a great sence of humour, being canadian i am fluent in both official languages, english and profanity. as i grow older i notice that some of my sence's have changed, hearing, has become more selective, i can hear valves tick, but the wifes voice, huh what was that dear,..... my sence of sight, i close my eyes now because some things you cant "unsee" my sence of responsabilty has matured ( hahaha me mature,.,...ya right) and my sence of humour is worse than most, (i like it)
so poke away,.....the first kick video will be up toninght. the shop where i droped it off for the mechanical inspection has a 29,000 mile 74 mark 3 commando in the shop, with a metal side cover,....hmmmmmm.

Brian I have a complete yellow kit from Sprint manufacturing in South of England. Norvil USA has their moulds now, so I know they made two kits by the sounds of it. Cheers.

looks like i am getting an appraisal done this week, should be interesting. I would like to add a few modifications to the bike that will enhance its drivability and reliability. Any feed back on a one way valve in the oil sytem to stop the tank from draining oil back into the sump? also looking at a ignition module, the power arc looks interesting and programable any thoughts? i have no owners manual or factory tool kit for it, is it just a commando tool kit and commando owners manual?

thx

jon

The more I think about it, the less I worry about wet sumping. That's why the oil pump is there.

What a great boss you have. Most people are lucky to even get a half way sincere thank you for years of service. Big congrats, welcome and I'm happy as heck for you.

The only sure-fire way to keep oil out of the sump is to put in a manual valve that you open when you go through the start up. It is also one of those ideas that will create a huge amount of negative feedback, obviously because of the damage that will result when it is forgotten. Reconditioning the oil pump to get the tolerances as close as possible and starting the bike often will help. It has also been discussed that the choice of oil can influence the rate at which it finds its way past the gears in the pump. Despite this making sense it is difficult to quantify. Almost every solution has somebody who has had a good experience and somebody who hasn't with the range being from a nuisance to a disaster.

Regarding the EI...pick one and do it! I doubt I would have ever successfully gotten my Amals dialed in without getting rid of my points. It also helped the process to check the timing with a degree wheel and to clean up the wiring.

I can't believe points would mess up the carb unless points not set up correctly. Believe me, I am not trying to start a rant here. It just may be the EI are easier to set up, I can't deny that, but I have had very good luck with my AAU. May be a Geezer issue.
