hi all being new here I should introduce myself I'm mark myself and a friend a building a 1970 commando custom and I have a1965 triumph. we have hit a few issues on the Norton and need some advice and luckily found this site,
we started by timing the carbs to lift together the adjusted the idle screws and set the needle to the center slot and have finally got it running but, we can't seems to get it to run smooth, I adjusted the timing ( electronic) and it just seems to speed the revs but still runs rough, I'm getting to a point of not sure what to do next then all of a sudden we had oil blow through the right side anal what could be causing this and what adjustments to set the amals at a standard starting point and I'm trying to find good info on the rocker gaps any help would be great as this bike hasn't run for 33 years and needs to be back on the road

standard valve clearances on a 750 are 6 thou on the intakes and 8 thou on the exhaust, TDC compression stroke, get a shop manual

got a manual just want to get input from the guys that know any idea why the oil and amal
starting settings as in factory etc

maybe the reason the bike was parked 33 years ago was it was running rough and spitting oil out the carbs....

have you systematical gone though things like a compression test, adjusting the valves, checking the ignition system (the factory timing markings in the primary cover can be off as much as 4-6 degrees ) etc etc etc, new plugs .. the list goes on

The learning curve to deal with a Norton can be a bit steeper then some bikes. If you were raised on modern bikes your thinking will need to be bent back to a different mindset concerning Maintanance etc. even though you think you cleaned the carbs I'd bet there is a chance your pilot jet in one or both carbs is clogged. Read up on it by using the search function here. You will need a #78 drill or a piece of .006 wire. Go to any good music store & tell them you need a .006 guitar string. My BSA will do what your describing with the jet even slightly clogged. Read up on wet sumping and crank case breathers to understand reasons for oil blowing around.
