Hi all who see this. Happy Holidays

I was thinking about new ideas for the forum. I was considering having a competition, but changed my mind. If any users have any ideas to make the forum more interesting and to get more users to sign up, send me a PM and let me know your ideas. It might be something we should consider,

Cheers for now- Jerry

Jerry:

Your last update made the forum more interesting. The only change I can suggest is a name cHange to "Norton and other Vintage British Bikes" as we now have a good range of the Triumph, Royal Enfield, AJS, etc. We might get more contributors if it wasn't identified as specifically Norton.

I think you're doing a splendid job of running this thing. I dread to think how many hours you spend on it. Best wishes for the New Year and long may the forum thrive. I'd really miss it if it went Tango Uniform.

The best forums are the easiest to use.

The best forums have the best posters.

The best forums draw the most people.

As YouTube knows you support your best contributors who create the best content.

All bits of wisdom I gathered from fortune cookies. #mostlytrue

A roster of Forum members who agree to be listed, with access only to those on the list.

This way we can look each other up when in their locale.

+1 for Slick's idea.
However, I think this does exist in a manner - those that have listed/entered their bike in the Database can be sorted by State/Province, although there is no place for us to enter our city/town. If that were available and sortable (merely being alphabetized within the State/Province sort would likely suffice) than it might easily achieve the desired effect. Those that do not wish their location to be shown could simply not enter it.

It would also be of potential benefit in reaching out to someone to possibly provide feedback on or look at a bike for sale, etc., in their area.

Another suggestion:
A sub-category within the Norton Commando Forum for new Norton owners mostly, but also for everyone else, with individual threads listing the known weak points of the Commando (layshaft bearing, crankcase ventilation, Amal Mk1 bores, OE coils, etc.) and the acknowledged fixes - moderated/edited by a few of the forum's most technically astute members where they sort the fixes in order of most helpful/useful to least. This would have the moderator maintain the initial (top) post in a clean and clear manner adding to that post's list or adjusting it as deemed necessary with all other posts falling in line below.

This would provide quick and easy access to pertinent details with the member having the ability to browse the "supporting" posts as they chose to, but being able to get to the meat immediately at the beginning/top.

As an example, the OE coils are known to be marginal at best. Shortly after I bought my first 850 Commando in 1973, I read an article by Cook Neilson where he discussed this and provided a solution - use two coils from the 1960's-1970's Ford 300ci I-6 motors. Certainly seemed to work for my 850. Today, there are numerous alternatives available, and while I've seen a bit of discussion and posts (not done a search, just ran across material), I've not noticed any readily available material to help me research what the best choices are today. If things were categorized in perhaps 3 categories (lowest cost that does the job properly/best bang for the buck/best performance) I'd think it would certainly be a valuable asset to many.

I've just bought a 73 (38 years after I sold my last one) and am trying to re-learn and gather as much info as possible, especially seeing as the bike has sat under a tarp in an unheated garage for the past 14 years.

I guess that my suggestion is going to be contrary to the majority, but I suggest losing all of the other brands threads.

This is a Norton forum and sub categories like Royal Enfield and BSA just water down the content of the forum without really adding anything.
For me, it was/is the quality of the content (not quantity) that has made this forum one of my favorites and kept me coming back.

As far as ways of increasing traffic to the site.......................... I got nothing, sorry.

The various British bike categories do seem to take up a lot of space and as a result clutter up the home page visually. Like he says, 'this is a Norton forum'! An 'Other British Marques' section would probably be sufficient for the people with multiple bike syndrome. A 'Non-British' section would easily cover everything else. Déjà vu? No offense to Royal Enfield owners but in the current format I'd rather see a Velocette section in its place. It's bad enough that the 9sh_t1's are lumped next to the real Commandos, lol, kinda...

I would like to see you request (demand?) that every member post their location in their signature or visible profile. One never knows when help is just around the corner.

I would have to agree that I would not miss the various non Norton Brit bike categories (sections).

Instead, I would like to see the 'Other Nortons' category replaced with an expanded list of popular models such as:

Atlas
P11
650SS
Dominator
etc
etc
Other...for a catch all not named above

In this way, if we police ourselves and keep posts related to a particular model, problems related to a specific model can be organized for future reference by others.

Well, I really love this forum and as long as it's around I'll be a happy camper. I can't say that I've utilized the other brit bike threads here 'cuz I'm not really in to those, I do occaisionally look at other Norton, but by and large it's just the commando content for me and the time I have to spend on line. Cj p.s. I do use the for sale and wanted sections too, as I think that they are a great resource.

being able to upload pix is a huge plus for any site, it is also common and beneficial to be able to easily have access to "threads" started by a member,

right now, you have an easy "Search user’s posts" option

hello,

being able to upload pix is a huge plus for any site, it is also common and beneficial to be able to easily have access to "threads" started by a member,

You can upload pictures now if you are a VIP member. There is a small cost to be a VIP. It covers server storage and more.

Cheers

I like Alan C's idea but we don't need to bother Jerry as interested folks could pick an item or issue and start a thread requesting insights and discussions - and - then edit the 1st page of subject to list the check list for quick reference or point to further page the details or photos found. May need a prefix to these thread pages to recognize and find them easy. Crankshaft porno is pretty close example. Ignitions, Cases, rear wheel, etc, maybe even, ugh, oil thread... Jerry seems to thrive on digital doo doo so check with him on your own domain...

as far as nortons go, you might as well be at the top of the food chain, my casual looks at nortons on the web,

mostly led to this site,

That makes a lot of sense. Anything that can be done to reduce webmaster work/intervention is typically a significant benefit to all, not just the over-worked, under-compensated crazy people known as webmasters.

there is some very good stuff here worth further consideration.
Also Swoosh Dave has some very good guiding principles worthy of consideration..

A belated comment on "other makes". Royal Enfield, at the end, were part Norton.
The forks and front brake are entirely Norton!

@Jerry

Perhaps we should have a technical category, subdivided into engine, gearbox, clutch frame, wheels, etc.
Here members could post dissertations on some subject he feels particularly knowledgeable. However, discussion and comments would have to be limited to avoid pollution of the post, and having it deteriorate into insult slinging.

Hi Slick - I have thought about this before and it will have its problems. Mainly because who should be qualified and be considered an expert and give the advice? That's a fine line.

What if anyone could post, but critics would have ONE chance to correct any glaring errors or omissions, then the critic would be locked out from further entries on that particular post. This is the way professional publications are done by editors, but unlike professional pubs, the posting process does not have to pass editorial review.

The upside is a technical library that should be worthwhile to anyone seeking info on some particular subject. The downside, some mis-information might get posted, but critical follow up should alert a reader to the potential pitfall.
