new forktube circlip problem

My 74 Mk2 basket case came with new forklegs still in the packaging. The problem is the circlip groove for the bush is too narrow. I was able to sand down one circlip and get it seated right on the tube with the bush, but the tube doesn't move freely in the lower forkleg.

Anyone ever have this problem?
part number 063423

I guess I should get new ones, but I've heard about and now have experienced poor quality of UK pattern parts.
Anyone know where to go for replacements?

My old ones are nicked up, but maybe I could recondition them, Is there a good procedure?

cheers

There's a good chance that "poor quality UK pattern parts" were never made in the UK at all, but probably came from the far East?

Geniune Norton replacement stanchions/fork tubes are not particularly expensive.

If genuine Norton parts are found to be defective or substandard, then complain to your supplier.

M&S Cycle is the Shop where I bought the project, I'm not sure if there is a clue to who the Manufacturer is.

That doesn't look like an Andover Norton label to me.

You can certainly have your original tubes checked for straightness, hard chromed and ground to size. Any hydraulic cylinder specialist should be able to do this for you.

I have had the situation where the lower bushes were too tight in the fork leg and had them improved by a machine shop. Some bush kits seem less accurate than others and I now only use Andover Norton ones, which seem more consistant.

I bought some OE fork tubes and one was larger in diameter than the other so I honed out the I.D. of the bushings on one leg to make it work. Bothe sets of bushings fit perfectly on one tube but obviously too small on the other. Bushings were Norton as well.

I also had the issue with the circlip grooves being 'too tight'. It took an hour or so of massaging to get the circlips to fit. No issues with the lower tubes or bushes.

I didn't even know I needed tubes until I started rebuilding them. Apparently an encounter with a curb resulted in a slight bend right at the lower triple tree. Didn't see it until I rolled the tube on my bench.

thanks for the replies, and suggestions. A friend has a lathe and that seems the best fix, I spent 2 hours sanding down the circlips, and one still doesn't fit. A lathe would have taken less time, also I wouldn't have messed up my new bushings by "massaging" the circlips on. This is why it wouldn't offer into the lower leg smoothly. A cautionary tale for other newbs.

It helps to know the problems and solutions of others, so you can be confident in the fix. Guessing about how to solve something seems eat up most of my time. Also very cool to get advice from the UK, Hong Kong, Canada, Michigan, Florida!
cheers
