New Conrods

These are the new H beam rods I've been working on for a while.
the usual high spec details, forged 4340, al/bronze small end bushing ARP2000 3/8" NF bolts.
these are a direct replacement for your standard rods, same length, uses standard Norton bearings.
I guess the nearest to these are Carillo rods, my rods are lighter especially on the small end.
will be finishing a batch hopefully later in the week.
this is not a sales pitch as I know one or two members object to us guys showing our new products here.
I'm happy to delete the post if there are issues.

Very nice, especially if you can price them well under Carrillos. Always nice to have choices.

Very nice.
How will we ever know what your doing if you don't put it up for all to see. Jim

madass,
Can you tell us a bit more about these rods? Will the difference in weight in the small end be noticed in any way? How do they compare to the stock rods for strength?

You make such beautiful products. I am always curious about how they are made. Do you have a manufacturing facility? A small shop? Farm the stuff out? Inquiring mind(s) want to know.

well Stephen I guess the fitting of my rods would be the same as fitting Carillo rods or similar, my rods weigh 498 grams , Carillo are bit more at 508 grams my small end weight is 14 grams lighter than Carillo.
I will be fitting a set in my current build and balancing the crank which I would do anyway.
I guess if you are changing rods, pistons then you should be rebalancing the crank, but I'm sure many engines have gone together without rebalancing.

unless someone can convince me otherwise 65% although 62% is another figure I would happily try in a Iso frame

Posting new products like this can hardly be objectionable. Post away!

If I may, and this is not criticism, it's difficult to compare with JS's Carillo from a weight point of view, given that the Carillo is longer and matched only to special and lighter piston, isn't it ?

But for those willing to use standard specs pistons, this is a really great alternative and we must thank you for giving us new perspectives !

It isn't, there are Carillos as STD replacements and they have been around for decades by now.

Carrillo have had several varieties of Norton rods that they carry as standard part numbers, as well as custom rods like the JS Engineering bits made to customer requirements. Their standard specification for Commando engines is NO-COM-55875S-00. When I first started buying from Carrillo in the late '70s, that rod had a total weight of 512 g, with 370 g big end and 142 g small end. The last batch of them that I ordered, several years ago, were considerably lighter, with a total weight of 472 g, with 338 g big end and 134 g small end. The significant difference in Jim's rods is a lighter small end. Even though the rods are longer, they are only 431 g total weight, with 326 g big end and 105 g small end. It took a lot of work between JIm and the Carrillo engineers to get the small end that light, and it was only possible because they could eliminate the bronze bushing by using DLC wrist pins. FWIW, Carrillo also have a standard spec for the longer 750 short stroke rod, with a total weight of 528 g, a 371 g big end and a 137 g small end. I think these weights are all from Carrillo specs, but some may have come from my own measurements. In any case, they could be different for current production. Carrillo does make changes from time to time.

For comparison, a stock rod is typically around 390 g total, with big end at 312 - 326 g and small end at 75 - 78 g.

I'm merely a parts user/consumer not a parts brewer pusher so ask how the seam is made in maddasses Slim Jim big end as can't see any evidence of it in photo. Cracked off caps is modern standard.

I just did a rebuild on a MKIII, Carillo rods std Pistons balenced to 70%.. It shakes alittle more below 2500 rpm, but is very smooth above. I can actually see behind me now.

Ken.

Thanks IcrKen for these details, I admit I was really unaware of the multiple options Carillo offered.

Anyone having made a short stroke with these ?
