Hey just got an ad from vintage triumph supply saying they have aluminum amal 930 premiers. I guess that is better than the pot metal ones. Good for early norton but I have 932 so can't use. Other than a tiny bit of weight unsure how much better. Any thoughts?

By Jove Baldy, we don't say pot metal we use that fancy material name (that escapes me for pot metal)

If they are made from some form of aluminium and the slide is similar, the slide will still wear (like Dellorto's) ?

They are still Premiers so the slides are hard anodized and exactly the same as those in the zinc-alloy carbs.

Dellorto's have hard anodised alloy slides in aluminium bodies (or whatever it is) and eventually the anodising wears through randomly.
I guess a slide replaced is better than a new carburetor not knowing how a Premier goes with high mileage/hours.

Mikuni's with chromed slides ? seem to go the distance (with an air filter)

Yes but the Amal's are so much simple to set up and work on and they go so well when set up and the Premier's are better to get into the jets for cleaning.

Here's a Premiere slide after 22,000 miles. Looks as new.
Same with the carb body.
This is with the Zinc alloy, time will tell if the Al. Carb is this good.

These new Aluminium Premiers are good news. I was just about to spring for a pair of the current models but will hold off now. Surely someone with existing Premiers is keen to upgrade to Aluminium and wishes to flog their old 932 Premiers off. Let me know if you do as you have a willing buyer ready and waiting :)

A couple of years ago I held a zinc alloy 600 carb in one hand and an aluminium 600 in the other. The weight difference was noticable. The pre 65 trial guys latched onto them as soon as they came out and the aluminium 600's have been very popular with them.

Think of three on a T150...that is a lot of weight saved. More to the point isnt the weight it is how the bodies hold up.
One would think that the ally would be better. At what they ask for them they better!

That’s a key question for me...

Which wears better, alloy bodies or standard bodies ?

Apart from serious competition bike builders, or the seriously OCD (like Ludwig or Glen!), I do not think the weight saving aspect should be a serious consideration for the average road rider, I mean, fitting an e start and lightweight carbs... isn’t that a bit like having two large Big Mac meals with a Diet Coke...?!

just out of interest is there a big differential in price between standard premier and alloy body

they are not currently listed on Burlens web page

The weight issue might also include that much mass vibrating on the end of the inlet stubs. If they are rubber mounted perhaps moreso.
But then people put lead in the ends of their handlebars to reduce vibrations so I am not engineer enough to know if this is good or bad.
Only Ludwig would get excited over the actual weight saved!

Wait a mo' : just looked and the cost diff twixt zinc and ally is very reasonable: 10 quid! I wish now I had gotten a set for the Trident!
Oh well...live and learn.

Many years ago a rep. from Amal showed me a Magnesium Concentric. It was so light it almost floated away. As for the aluminium bodied Concentrics, if used with hard anodized slides AND filters they should outlast most of us. The MK2s have always used this construction.

Just the strainer on the fuel tap and the standard Amal strainer at the banjo, no inline filter.

Sorry Glen, I meant air filtration! I‘m asking as the slide looks so good. Original premiers would have been shot long ago at that mileage, yet they (as you said) look like new ...

Of course! A bit sleepy this AM
K&N pod filters.
I was pleasantly shocked at the perfect condition of the slides.
The carb bodies are similar, no real wear, just a few polished areas.
At this rate of wear, they will long outlive me!
