hi all new to this forum and commandoes.could any one tell me what is involved in correcting neutrol light plate?to get the light to come on in neutrol as it only comes on in 4th gear any advice please gearbox strip?

I must admit I don't understand how the camplate could be operating the switch at the 4th gear position instead of neutral?

Have you tried adjusting the switch by screwing it in or out slightly?

yes lab have tried adjusting switch and the only way light is on is 4 th gear.ive never worked on nortons before and my haynes doesnt show where the switch locates inside the gearbox

I suggest you also use the factory Commando Mk3 manual: http://britmoto.com/manuals/Manuals/850_man.pdf
However the factory manual doesn't give much information about the switch either (section J18).

A small bump (rivet head?) on the front face of the camplate should operate the switch when the camplate moves to the neutral position.

Does your Mk3 have the standard gearchange lever and gear selection pattern with the gear lever on the left side (and no rearsets) pressed down for 1st, and up for the other three gears, as madass140 suggested, the camplate could have been reversed, if so, then that might explain why the switch is operating at the 4th gear position instead of neutral?

yes lab left change 1 down 3 up no rearsets.to get to the camplate does this require striping the gearbox?thanks

Yes.

If you were to partially dismantle the gearbox first (by removing the gearbox outer and inner covers) then you should at least be able to see why the switch isn't operating correctly?

new switch fitted

Did the old switch do exactly the same thing as the new switch (or didn't the old switch work at all)?

Did you buy the switch from one of the usual Norton Commando parts suppliers or did you get it elsewhere (ebay)?

hi lab.the switch that was in it had no connecters on when i purchased the bike amonst other problems. i used rgm to replace the switch

I'm out of ideas then.

Unless the new switch is faulty I can think of no other option except to look inside the gearbox to see why the switch isn't working as it should (which would also be an ideal opportunity to check/replace the layshaft bearing, 1st gear bush and the ratchet spring).

Hi there
Can you remove the switch then see or feel if cam plate has the bump to work the switch before pulling the gearbox apart ?

Kev

I'm thinking along the same lines as Kev, take the switch out and put a rod/small screwdriver etc. into the hole and get someone to operate the gear lever and see if you can feel the "lump" that operates the switch,

Dave.
