The is my 2016 Norton Atlas, it has gone through a full nut and bolt rebuild and modification. This bike has no numbers matching and is put together from several Norton models. In the next few posts I will take you back how this all came together.

Where it all started, I had a post on Kijiji looking to trade my 1983 Harley Ironhead for a British 650 or 750cc pre 70’s bike.
On Nov.2015 I received a reply from a Harley fan how had a Norton project he just couldn’t finish and wanted to trade. We traded pics and these are the ones I was sent and stole my heart.

Very nice Bud that had some nice parts on it even the Atlas fenders looked to be in nice shape I would say you got the better on that trade.

Yes I did, but the major thing was that the Atlas was not a runner. So that was where I was taking a chance.

This is what I replaced the old twin carb set-up with:
A Norton Atlas Single Mikuni manifold VM34 Carb Conversion Kit and manifold.
I replaced the filter for a Carb Velocity Stack
I also converted the chock lever that was mounted on the side of the carb to except a cable connection, so I can open and close from the handle bar lever.

Been try to put a history together on my bike and it's getting really interesting.
I was told by the last owner that the bike was an Atlas, but from the Frame code 18/129550 this would make the bike a 1968 Mercury 650 (1 of 750 bikes built).
The motor code 20/1146714P (P= Plumstead) is from a earlier 1965 Atlas 750.
If anyone knows more about these two build codes, I'd love to hear about it.

Here's a closer look at the Joe Hunt Magneto that replaced the stock Lucus Magneto and ignition system. The Joe Hunt mag is a all in one unit that connected to the stock timing sprocket and cleaned up the ignition system.

I have a 64 Atlas that has some Dunstall mods on it one of the mods is the breather was moved to the timing case so they could run an oil line to where the breather originally was on the camshaft that is also run in needle bearings at least that's what the original owner told me. The original owner would be Bob Schontz (not sure if I spelled his name right) that use to own Domiracer or back in those days it was called Sunset motors in Cincinnati Ohio.

I have a Mercury, matching numbers, 129551
Hope to see you at our Mods and Rockers event in August.

What are the chances of that, they came down the assembly line one after another. So what year is your Mercury registered as?
I plan to be there if I don't have to work.

The Carb set-up does not matter or effect the running of the Joe Hunt Mag.

Do you know if you can use the Joe Hunt magneto with the Amal twin carb setup :?:
