I picked up a nice brass crackcase plug at the local swap meet. Out of an Atlas, I think. I want to use it in my 1968 Commando, but I would like to adapt it to take a magnetic drain plug. Here is a photo of the ones commerically available:

Has anybody modified a stock plug one to take a small magnetic plug? The general idea is to turn a small boss out of brass and silver solder it on the head of the large plug, then bore and thread it. I am wondering why the boss is so long? Not enough meat in the original plug head? Anybody done this modification?

I bored a hole in the center of both of the 3/8 inch drain plugs -tank and engine case- and installed 3/16 diameter high power magnets. Never tried to do the large plug however. Jim

Plug to take late crankcase magnetoscrew 06-4188 available from Andover Norton, part# 06-7249.

I got off the shelf small dia plug with super magnet installed in '72. Nice to monitor the ferric wearing. Ms Peel's Maney cases has the big size plug but sans magnet. I'm going to drill plug to fasten a ring magnet down plus sealed with JBWeld. I will hand a small magnet off '72 dip stick to both measure oil level and pick up some ferric dust before settles in bottom cake. Will prefilter Peel's new OIF with screen and ring magnet made from barrel of a stash pipe.
