My pal Dave Mathers and I were trying to come up with a way to keep the primary case from leaking at the mainshaft seal. When Dave was putting his bike back together after a rebuild due to a malfunction of the check valve in the oil line, it became apparent that the inner case was not lining up with the mainshaft. In the factory manual, there is a drawing of a tool that slides over the mainshaft to keep the seal from being damaged.

Milfordite, this is a nice item and a good post. Please believe me, I mean no disrespect.

LAB/JD, Another good example of why we need disparity. It took me 10 minutes and a look through the manual to see that this is a MKIII thing and has nothing to do with the 90%+ of the other Commandos manufactured.

To align the inner primary cover seal with the sleeve gear neck I made a sleeve similar to your photo except there is an od land turned to fit into the seal through hole while the id is c'bored to clear the sleeve gear and while maintaing a close sliding fit on the mainshaft. Then the gearbox has to be loose to allow alignment.
I will attempt to find a photo to post.

Well, it does clearly state "MkIII" in the title, so you could've just moved on to the next thread, but no, you couldn't help yourself but look...could you?

(Oh, and, it's probably closer to 80% and I'd estimate around 60-70% of all surviving Commandos are MkIIIs :) )

here are some snaps...

the sleeve id is c'bored to clear the snap ring on the main shaft, not the sleeve gear as previously stated.

Sorry about the truncated post. Computer issues!
It does clearly say in the title, "MKIII " , maybe some folks should read first, then complain later!
Anyway, similar to AntriMan, I made a second piece that fits snug within the seal well to align things perfectly.

With the inner case in place loosely, you can insert the second piece to align things correctly. Had to loosen all the engine and trans bolts and use straps to get things lined up! But it does work! And no leaks!
