Hi

As my proddie rebuild has come to a halt (welding/blasting) I thought I would post my other rebuilds to keep me motivated.

This one is my Road bike. Its been off the road since the frame tubes fractured where the head steady had been welded on.
Terry Mead of Faber frame fame, who also builds a mean MK2 frame, had to replace the headstock & all the downtubes. He welded a few brackets for me for footrest mounts & exhaust bobbins. My friend Peter arranged blasting & coating. Its much greener than the original oily black racing green but I will live with it as I need to repaint everything. The petrol tank got damaged & I lent the seat to a friend (spike at Ragged edge racing) to take a mould. I intend to alter a couple of things ie fit Tarzocchi footrests/levers etc but keep to the classic style it had.

What motor is going in this one Chris?

It looks like a replica, do you mind if I ask how much it cost and where you obtained it ? I would love to own another Mk3 , mine is very good.

Hi

Eddie, the engine is a MK2a 850. Balanced crank, 4s cam, It did have a flowed head by Gordon who mechanics at meetings for Dave Watson but the exhaust port stripped. I have had it repaired but will stick with the standard head I used for the last 5 thousand miles. Used the engine at Pembrey a few years ago.

Acrotel, The frame was built by Graham Hurst for a Paul Best to use with a G50 engine in 1984. Terry will do a Mk2 for £1400 & Danny Barber a Mk3 for less.

Kenny, Hope to get 3 finished for this season. Only one from scratch (yamsel) Trouble is I have "borrowed" parts to keep racing & need a fair few bits. Want to get them all up as rollers so that I can see the wood from the trees.

Chris

ps have a good season, hope you get over here again.

Nice one Chris.

And the Daytona?

Thanks for that Chris. A few years back I spoke to Barber of Attleborough and the figure was about that back then. At that time they said they hadn't sold frames overseas. I'm pretty broke right now however I'd really love to gat a second Mk3. I think I will have to find another job, start working again - life is too short to be bumming around. Who supplies the tanks ?

Hi Eddie

The Daytona, have a look in "other classic bikes"
Acrotel, Tanks are a problem. The tank on my MK3 is an original lozenge shape one. It had a big off at Paddock Hill bend at Brands & the sides no longer mirror each other :D However you cant see it when you look at the bike! While he is still making them (he is semi retired) Peter Kyte is the man. You cannot fault the craftsmanship or value for money. However you will need to wait as he only works on tanks in the order that the deposit arrives. ( It is the right way to conduct business & Pete is very fair. expect to wait at least a year) You can buy them from Minovation or Holtworks for approx £500.
Have a look at the oil tank on the Yamsel thread :D
Need a spacer made for the front wheel as I have used the second Norvil disc fork leg for another race bike.
I have fitted Landsdowne dampers to the forks & Tomasseli clip ons. Have not found my clock pods or headlamp yet!!!!

That is a lot of offset on those fork yokes. It looks as though there is enough to have the bike stand up under brakes. Have you ridden the bike with them already ?

Hi

Cleaned up the back wheel & spindle & spacers. Garage is a bit cluttered.

Hi

Cleaned up the discs (only using one this time) They rust really easily. "Sussex by the sea" Plenty of salt in the air. :D
Anyway up on its wheels.

Hi

Rained like the proverbial today. Cold & dark. Spent 5 hours cleaning & polishing. Hope to finish the engine plates off tomorrow & look to get the engine & gearbox in.
I have to clean up the threads on the bottom yoke, typically one tap I do not have

Chris

Hi

Well another beautiful day here in Blighty. So put the waterproof on & got under the garage door & began polishing the engine plates.
Quick wash of the gearbox with degreaser & in it went. Managed to drop the engine in before I got too wet. Enough for now. Its been dark for 2 hours & I need a bath.
Polishing is a grotty job but a great feeling when its done. Lots of parts to find (fair few on other bikes) but at least it is a roller again.

Your engine plates look good. Are you going to buy a pair of rubber mounted inlet manifolds ? I really like your bike, it looks similar to my own. You've inspired me to take my exhaust off, remove the rust and repaint it. If it is cool enough this week, I will start it again - there is a ride day coming up on the 14th.
It looks like the two bosses for the head steadies are missing from your frame.

Hi Acrotel

No bosses. The frame cracked! that's why I had to get the frame retubed. I am going to use the tab welded behind the stem with a tie rod. The inlets on there are from going back to Amal mk1s while I got spares for my Dellorto pumpers. I set them up with settings from the 860 Ducati but they are far to rich. Bike went like a good one but only did 35 to the gallon?

Chris

Mine has two bosses and I've fitted tie rods with rose joint ends to the rocker box. I also have a curved chrome moly tube with offset mounts in the front of the motor to allow a slight bit of spring if the motor bounces. I think if it is too rigid, it must crack when subject to vibration for a long time. I think that the flex which occurs near the swing arm is much less than what occurs in the curved tube and the stress is spread over a large area.

Hi

Well found my first problem tonight. The retubed frame! My clamp on front tubes no longer marry up with the front engine mount!
Guess who had them painted?
Just cos the bike has been togeather before, doesn't mean you shouldn't do a dry build.

ps also found my clock holders & they need painting
