The mechanics of the removal are clear. The part that gets a bit foggy is the part that says lean bike over to the left using the side stand. I have no side stand and that seems a little precarious anyways. So I am looking for any helpful hints to get the wheel out from under the fender. Changing the rear tire is my final task before departing for Oregon and points beyond on the 16th.

Try putting the bike up on the centerstand and then working it up onto a piece of 1 X 6 or 2 X 6 if need be. Or of course, you can just lay the bike on it's side...

To lift the rear with center stand put enough wood under stand, 1/2", and weigh down the front. If no center stand a board and a jack can get rear up if placing lift point far enough rear ward. Not that stable though unless tied off. No center stand or place to lift my SV650 so at home hang it by rafter lift and at tire shops with car jack under with it leaning on a post/pole with something to protect finish.

But the best quick cheap and compact lifter is rectangle shape made of pipe/conduit with a 4+ foot long lever. Just slip under bike in spot to lift either front or rear, then push down and bike held up stable. Handle angled so when holding bike the mass keeps handle down bike up. Unless you jerk too hard on bike then better put something on the lever handle like a feed sac. Essentially is like the axle jacks with a bar across instead of the axle ends. I made mine from electrical section of builder supply. If lever handle not fixed real tight it can pivot to allow a flat fold up against a wall but still allows it to lever the box and bike up right w/o tightening it.
