Hi Chaps, my mk3 has this electronic ignition fitted. Would anyone care to hazard a guess as to what make it is? I can't see any signs of an aftermarket black box under the seat - could it be OE? Did they have Lucas Rita as standard?

Mk3 ignition

Hello Boxerfan
Your picture shows an early Boyer pickup plate. You can tell its one of the early ones as it has the screw terminals. When I bought my MK3 earlier this year I found (in the workshop manual that came with the bike)the installation sheet for a Boyer MK4 ignition which I thought was great as I was intending refitting the electric start. What did I find when curing a head gasket leak, lo and behold a Boyer MK1A. That said This boyer hasn't let me down and I now have it as a working spare. I fitted a Pazon when refitting the electric start.
The screw terminal pickup plate is better than the later versions as they suffer from wire breakages adjacent to the solder connections.
Regards
Peter

I had the same early Boyer and it became a problem on my E-Start. I didn't know why the engine kicked back to ruin the sprag until some research by Dyno Dave showed that early Boyers could fire fully advanced under low voltage conditions. If you're kicking it and the battery is up, it should be no problem.

Besides a complete replacement of the charging system and a new DD starter, I replaced the Boyer with a Pazon Altair.

Yes that was my first early Boyer. Brings back memories of kickbacks. Good advice not to run it on the MK111 model at all. :|

Very interesting... This mk3 came to am a year ago with a broken sprag & a sheaf of paperwork. A trawl through revealed three receipts for new sprags, some only a few hundred miles apart! I have ambitions to fix the e-start, so it sounds like Pazon might figure in my future...

This forum is the bee's knees!

Cheers, Jon

Yes the 3 dead $pragues are surely wrecked from the early model Boyer fitted . So order in that new Pazon for MK111 and pull the backfire device for re-calibration of 50 lb. tension disengagement safety. There are other spragues available now cheaper and a little stronger. :|

Ditto the kick-back device adjustment. Mine was locked up tight and wouldn't release at all. I found it all galled up so it must have been slipping until it locked up, or that's my theory at least. Anyway, it's all polished out, I made the tool and got it set properly.

Here's the cheapest source for a sprag I've found - working perfectly for me:
