It seems it's been a long time since I've wrestled with cross over pipes. I am not sure how they assemble. The cross over tube will fit OVER the stubs and overlap each side by no more than 1/4". This seems barely effective. I would think it should be just long enough to fill the gap and be the same diameter as the stubs...no overlapping just butting up to the stubs. OR....the tube should overlap the stubs by about an inch on each side.
#2 the tube clamps. They slide over the tube and my guess would be that 1/2 the clamp would be on the stub and 1/2 would be on the crossover tube. The 1/2 that is on the stub will need a tube shaped spacer to take up the difference but I don't see the spacer listed in the parts book or the OB website. Nor do I recall ever seeing this spacer. None of these parts seem like they are made for each other. I can make them work by cutting a pair of tube spacers but I am curious. What am I missing here?

The crossover tube is the same diameter as the Stubbs
It's butts almost up to the stubbs
You slide the clamps onto the crossover tube first then slide the out once in position
At least that's how it works on mine
Cheers

Agree with both the above...... Just remember the clamps need loosening before and re-tightening after any time the head is re-torqued too

I agree with you. However, the clamps I just bought from OB a week ago tell a different story. The O.D. of the stub is 1 1/4. Same on yours?

The O.D. of the stub is 1 1/4.

If the stub OD is 1 1/4" then it's undersize. The stubs should be the same diameter as the balance pipe as others have said.

Well, we have another unsolvable mystery. The owner swears the exhaust system is the original on the bike. The new tube clamps from OB rattle on the stubs. I am not going to bother with finding the answer, I just cut the appropriate spacers and make it work.
