Mk3 alternator

Hi everyone I have a mk3 I'm playing with & was wondering how can I test alternator wires to see which is which over time the fuel has made both green & yellow Also From the wiring loom near headsteady I have 6 red wires joined to one eyelet is this normal and finally does the positive from harness to battery get taped up or do I earth that to frame or spare next to purple to red 3 way terminal 2 red 1 purple one side 1 red 1 purple the other thanks John Can I send photos with iPhone & photo bucket

The alternator output is AC, although the wires are different colours, it doesn't actually matter.

I wouldn't say it's normal to have that many (is electronic ignition fitted?) however, it should be OK left as it is.

The "battery positive" ring terminal from the harness is best connected to ground or taped up, IF the starter motor is in use.
The Red (+) harness ground to battery connection shown on the Mk.3 wiring diagram is technically incorrect.
