Can a Mk2 Interstate battery side cover be used on a MK3 Interstate with the ham can air cleaner?

What are the issues please?

The tool stowage compartment in the Mk2 panel (unless Mk2A*) would also have to be removed as that space is occupied by the Mk3's 'across-the-frame' battery and tray.

*(The Mk2A cover doesn't have the tool compartment but the 'A' panel mounts are different to Mk2 and Mk3.)

To mount a Mark II side panel on a Mark III, I would replace the battery tray to a Mark II or earlier as well. That way you can retain your tool box and the battery tray also has the lower rear side panel mount already on it. Another thing worth noting is that the earlier side panel has a cutout in its leading edge for the ignition switch which the Mark III does not require.

I had a forum member contact me with a problem in that the starter motor's battery terminal interfered with the ham can style air filter. He ended up getting a narrower air filter from RGM motors and I machined a couple of carburetor adapters for him. Unfortunately he never contacted me to inform me if it worked out. I don't know much about the 850 Mark III's (I have a Mark IIA). Maybe the starter motor can be clocked differently, or maybe there are other starter motors that are available that would not have this clearance problem. I'm sure some Mark III owners will chime in on that.

Yes, we did exactly as @PeterJoe has detailed.

Pre-MK3 battery carrier has allowed us to get a very larger battery in.

The slimmer ham can air filter from RGM has given us the additional wiggle room we were looking for. https://www.rgmnorton.co.uk/buy/com...-air-filter-assembly-stainless-steel_4475.htm

I believe you can indeed rotate the starter motor so that the connector is on the underside, but we didn’t need to do that in the end.

I’m really pleased with the way it turned out

Thanks guys for info and photos.
If you don't want a battery tray change and you are looking to fit a Mk2 Interstate side cover to a Mk3 Interstate.
It would seem the addition of a lower pin would be easy.
removing any internal side cover structure seems self evident.
isn't the hole for Dzus fastener already on a Mk3?

Any Interstates with this earlier side cover?

However, the across-the-frame Mk3 battery would make fitting a cover to a lower rear pin difficult, and obviously why it changed to a single upper rear pin and a tab with rubber buffer at the bottom of the cover.

If you mean the hole in the frame plate then it is there.
