I'm looking for people to recommend a battery upgrade for the Mk3 ES. It would be useful to know what people have used.

Many thanks

Luke

WestCo AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) 12V14L-B battery (equivalent to YB14L-A2)

I went to a company called Battery One and purchased the biggest battery that would fit in the battery compartment. I went to the gel-type battery with the highest cold cranking amps. Works very well with no problems. There are other companies that deal in batteries only, that you can check with. Battery Warehouse is another that you can check with. Hershey

Hershey - this is great. I don't suppose you know the make and number of the battery you bought?

Kind regards,

Luke

You'll want to get the biggest battery that will fit in your Mk3. I installed a Yuasa YTX20CH-BS in my Mk3 two years ago. It gives you 18 A-H and 270+ CCA in a 6-0" x 3-7/16" x 6-3/8" package that will fit without modifying the cage. This battery is a sealed ("no-maintence") wet-cell battery. While glass-mat technology is appealing, I could not find one that would produce much more than 200 CCA and still fit. I believe that you'll find that even today, AGM technology carries a performance hit with it. There may be a lifetime benefit with AGMs that I'm not aware of, and they are more reliable if you operate them upside-down, but a big sealed wet-cell will give you higher confidence when you push the green button.

PowerSports delivered one to my door in two days for 100 bucks.

I have been hearing about a new motorcycle battery on the market by Shorai. They have one for the Goldwing that is smaller and lighter than the stock battery but has better cranking power and power retention. They are a bit pricy but it may be worth it. They show one specifically for the Commando Electric Start. Here is the link to their page; http://www.shoraipower.com/s-81953-Comm ... start.aspx Again, expensive, but might be worth a look.

The one I bought from Battery One is a ETX-14 Gel type with 200-cca Works very well, with no starting problems. Hershey

I'm waking up this old thread, in hopes that I'll get comments on newer technology batteries now being used. Anyone?

zzzzzzzzzz

My '74 had an Odyssey PC545 which lasted 13 years before beginning to fail. I installed a cNw electric start kit and the battery they
recommended. Shorai LFX21L6-BS12. It has been 19 months and it spins the motor effortlessly.

My '75 had a Yuasa YTX16-BS. While it easily started the totally stock motor, it failed after 4+ years. I replaced it with the
Shorai LFX21L6-BS12 and after 18 months it still easily spins the motor.

Both batteries will charge up to 14+ v and hold charges of 13.3v. They are not cheap!, Are 1/3 the size and 1/4 the weight of
a conventional battery.

I will be happy to provide a followup post when/if either battery fails.

There are a number of opinions on this forum about Shorai batteries and should be read. It's like oil..
