Due to a motorcycle accident my right knee is Stuffed, so the kick start is superfluous.
Today after a great ride yesterday, I went down to the garage to have another ride,
when I tried to start the bike, the starter sounded like a car when the Bendix gear
would not throw out.
Any ideas, as theoretically I'm confused?

Sorry to hear that. I'm no Norton starter expert but sounds like the sprag clutch has broken. That' the one way device on the crank that only rotates one way and releases and free wheels when the engine starts. Could be any of the other gears of course and there are several of them between starter and crank. You need to take a look in there. Sods law it goes wrong when the weather's good!

Ta, Have opened the primary cover, but I'm not sure which part the Sprag is, part # or description would be a great help.

You can always find a part # on the Old Britts site. Just find your model, etc, etc. I believe the starter sprag your looking for is just behind the starter gear. Which is the gear in the middle, it should freewheel clockwise and lock turned anti-clockwise. I think you have to remove the alloy alternator carrier and pull the anti-backfire device out before removing the starter sprag and primary chain tensioner. I have an MK11, so I'm not too familiar with the MK111.

Thanks, that has explained everything, tomorrow I'll do a quick check, then go to the shop.
I have to get a new primary gasket, as the last person didn't put one on, also I need to replace the
starter motor as one of the long preslite bolts had been stripped and glued in, I'm thinking of
putting in one of the new type. Again Thank you for all your Help.

As an aside, as you are using the starter often, the best upgrade (if not done already) is to definitely change the starter leads to the heavy duty type and fit a good battery like the West-Co unit as per the advice on here. Something I did on my MK 3 and the original Prestomitestart spins like a goodun! Good Luck ,hope you get it sorted.

Hi Chili.
I have both the sprag and mk 3 starter motors in stock, and heavy lead kits.
My contact details are on the Alton France website, or feel free to pm me.
Thanks,

Chili-dude, how far from Gympie are ya?-[local joke] - Tried left leg kick technique? Maybe park on a hill in the meantime..

J.A.W.-Maate I'm the Mayor of Gympie here in the Emerald City, as to the hill I live at the bottom of all the hills.
Will give norcomcycle a call, again Thanks

You should PM norton Dave in WA. I got a sprag from him for $50 and at that price you should maybe get 2
Great to deal with and good as gold

Cheers and hope the knee is not causing you too much grief

I just put a Odyssey Battery in my MK 3, the same one Colorado Norton Works uses. Best place to get one is here:

http://www.batterymart.com/?utm_source= ... 4AodkiYApQ

It fits in sideways, the terminals face out, no mods needed. + 1 on the good wiring, solder the lugs too. I have been running a Dave Comeau starter for years, the best. I got about 40K out of my original sprag clutch, they are not cheap. When you take the sprag out you will know if it is bad. You are lucky if it went in your garage, if that's what it is.

Good luck

MF

Sorry, to be so long in getting back to the forum, but have been away at work.
I got a sprag( which in my parts book is called a spring) possibly why i could not work it all out, and new starter motor
from NORCOMCYCLES, close to home, good service.
Anyway it now is all back together, working and better than new.
Again THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP.
