Its mirror time. I have mounted the rebuilt Lucas switch gear, rebuilt master cylinder and powder coated clutch bracket on new Euro-bars for my 1974 Commando Roadster. Now it time for mirrors.

The stock mirrors just don’t fit the revised character of the bike. I don’t do bar-ends, don’t like the additional width. A bit too trendy.

The taped holes in the master cylinder and clutch bracket are 3/8-24 UNF. Most after-market mirrors feature either 8mm or 10mm threads. I could fabricate or find a UNF to metric adopter.

However, are there any aftermarket mirrors that have the UNF thread? I have a pair of round, black quality mirrors off my Buell that have an 8mm thread but the shafts are .392” diameter. I am considering reducing the shafts to a 3/8 (.375” nominal) diameter and running a 3/8 die over it.

Would still like to find something with the 3/8-24 thread. Any suggestions?

I too have tried looking for round black mirrors (didn't NVT use 'Bumm' for contempory Triumphs?) for my Mk3 but I don't think you'll find anything 'off the shelf' As you point out, metric rules now.

I had the big square but with short stems on my T140V back in 96. the mirrors came from a Dyna Wide Glide.

Hope that helps.

Possibly Triumph, though the replacements that I see online are mostly universal with 10 mm threads.
I had a pair of round Honda mirrors for a while that fit the stock stalks.
The problem with shorter stalks is that you'll only see your elbows.

I have 3/8-24 mirror stems on my ‘72. I believe Andover Norton sells these. You can put any mirror on them that has the clamp.

Yes probably, but i use Stadium stainless mirror heads. Just checkout E bay and you will find some. They were very common for the scooter brigade. Roughly 5" wide by 31/4" inch deep.

The basic shaft diameter on the Buell mirrors I had were .390". I reduced the diameters to the nominal .375" and ran the 3/8 -24 UNF die for approximately 1.0". This gives enough thread for anchoring the mirror and a lock washer. I will use the mirror extenders as 850commando recommended.

I appreciate the mention of the stock or stock type original Commando mirror stalks that some mentioned. I still have the originals - will keep them in the box with all of the other "stock" stuff I will save if the next owner (probably my son) wants to return to a more factory original look.

There are many jewel-like castings and fabricated parts on the Commando that are aesthetically pleasing. However, as beauty is in the eyes of beholder the original mirrors and turn signals don't fall into that category. Sorry purists.
