Mikuni VM36 carb

I had one on my 750 for a while.


The advantage is that is flows more air in the middle to especially upper rpm ranges.

Being physically larger I had trouble making it fit under the tank because of the more angled throttle cable position.
 
Won't the existing intake ports size control actual fuel/air delivered no matter how large the carb throat diameter and maybe with air velocity a bit lower in the throat of a larger carb maybe less effective fuel atomising?
My guess is performance no better than 34mm VM but probably no worse,

I have had both 34 and 36mm versions on 850's and felt the 36mm in better and doesn't stranghle the top end as much. That said it's how often you really wanted to open her up. Most vendors sell/advise the 34mm for 750/850 but Allens in the UK have always sold just the 36mm version as their solution.
 
I have a VM36 and I don't know where you heard that it was the recommended size for an 850 Commando.
I believe that a VM34 is the generally prefered Mikuni size for normal running.
I didn't install the VM36 on my bike.....it was on it when I bought it. For a single Mikuni I would rather have the 34 as it's physically smaller and easier to install and remove. Also IMHO, proper jetting is easier to obtain than the 36.

I eventually will install a dual carb setup from JS Motosports and ditch the Mikuni. The VM36 gives me fits at times when trying to restart a hot engine, as it seems to vapor lock easily.........I haven't figured out a reliable solution for that issue yet.
 
I'd be interested in trying them both to see the difference. I've currently got a VM34 on my 750, but have a VM36 laying around in my TT500 pile o' bits.
Pvisseriii, what setup worked well when you had a VM36 fitted?

Most people have had success with,

Needle Jet 159-P2 although I have run the Q2. Start with the P2.
Jet Needle 6DH3, this seems to be popular across the board,
Main Jets are really relative to your preference, 240 to 280 and beyond. I have run up to 320 for better top end but 280 was my norm. 240 for economy.
Pilot jet, again, relative to your machine's needs 30, 35, or 40.

I think you should try it. I just changed my Norton 850 from a MIkuni VM 34 to an Amal 1038. It revs out better. I find I take it up to 6500 RPM occasionally now. There was no point before. The bigger bore helps.

It actually idles better with the Amal and looks better too. The low speed operation and starting seems equivalent to the Mikuni

I see that they also offer a VM38 ...I'm sure that would be even better than the 36mm...I believe that Mikuni also makes a 44 mm carb! Wow the sky is the limit. If big is good then bigger must be better using that logic..... :roll:

Just because one retailer offers the VM36 is that what everyone should use? Again just someone's opinion.

Space along with atomization are the limiting facters. With the Vm36, an angled cable connection was required to allow for routing. Anything bigger may be a deal breaker.
FWIW, I will be doing a little R&D with the TM36-68 pumper in a couple days. They are higher but out the bottom and the cable connects on the side.

I am just pointing out that Allens were the sole supplier of these Mikuni carbs for Commandos for a long time here in the UK. Having had both 34mm and 36mm versions on 850 Commando's I felt the 36mm was better.

I am sure though you know best :D
