I was out on my Mark III on Friday and made a 5 min stop. I came back out and the kickstarter wouldn't engage...it just kept slipping. I bump started and made it home. Today I had time and pulled of the outer and inner gearbox covers, The kickstarter pawl looked worn and I just replaced it a couple thousand miles ago.
I moved the layshaft around and it seems to have a lot of play...is this normal? Does this have something to do with wearing the pawl prematurely?

I took a little video of the lay shaft play. http://vid248.photobucket.com/albums/gg ... a46wcb.mp4

Well you probably have multiple issues. Not all pawls were/are created equal. Some break up easier than others , find a good hard one from earlier years pre- 75 is my advice for what it's worth. Once it starts slipping upon kickings then the inner cuts of 1 st gear can start to round and lose their edge to grab a bit too. Do not continue to use a slipping ratchet kick , just pull the covers and replace the pawl first. And plunger spring. Also if/when you do this you should consider the roller layshaft conversion.

Try the search feature upper right corner of the page. The bearing you need is NJ 203 E (C3) . Heat the box to get the old one out then drop in the frozen new one into the hot box.

There's no need to replace the timing side layshaft bush. Most of the acceleration/ decelleration forces involved are on the drive side and that's where a quality bearing is needed. :!:

Well it's your choice whether to do a half-assed job or not. It should at least be looked at carefully.

That's half-assed ? I suppose you fitted a new bush when you did yours or even a needle type roller

My TS layshaft bushing was worn (sloppy on the layshaft) so I replaced it with a new one. It isn't easy to get the old one out. Had to tap it inside and make a nut and bolt puller to get it out. I just figure the layshaft should have all the support it can get. There are a lot of opportunities for slop on the kickstart side.

You are kind of saying don't worry about it. Sorry I'm a little grumpy this AM.

Instantly forgiven. I'm well aware that removing that bush is so difficult that few owners actually do it.

I found a Superblend roller bearing at Old Britt's for $73 and at British Cycle Supply a Roller bearing for $48.96 Neither on give much info about the bearing.
