Aw poopoo that's stuff is mind numbing to a newbie I found, much easier and more current to just cry online for some hand holding and its all works out in the end.

In my personal opinion ya can't hardly do better to catch up on decades of Commando-doom than spend a year going through each of the delicious extensive selected ramblings archived ancient forum wisdom's sections in Capt. Norton's site.

As I remember, I had been through all of Captain Norton's Notes before I ever found this forum.

Yes , but a reality check for the " I want , do you get them in the cornflakes , wheres the nearest dealer ", brigade .

Anyone not haveing built & maintained there own vehicals is in for a rude awakening , or requires deep pockets .
That said , a well built fully overhauled machine SHOULD give trouble free service . But anyone without a degree
of mechanical sympathy and willing to learn the modus operandus of the operation may subject the machine to
uncalled for abusses .

Not to worry , but annoying to see deprevations inflicted on Noble Thoroughbreds . :| 8)

The Norton is about the only 'large' mechanical piece of equipment that I have worked on, but I've been through the whole thing. I may have missed some items, but so far I've had luck with it and it's been reliable for me. I certainly don't measure up to ludwig or probably most of you. I do enjoy working on it though and seem to have a degree of luck with it. I just always though it was bullet proof.

Hi guys here are some pics of gear I personally supervise and manage. They operate to 3000M, are run by eclectrohydraulics , controlled by 5 x PC's and fibre optics. 2 x robotic arms(manipulators) on the front. 7 Function manipulator is made by Schilling in the US
Sometimes I think spannering my Norton can be a touch harder!!!! There is a mixture of AF and Metric as well, handling systems are made in the UK (metric) ROV or sub is made in the US of A!!!
Worth $5m each, we have two on the vessel I am on at present
You can imagine the tech publications we get on all the OEM and subdry bits!!!

Perfectly Justified , if it pays for more Norton Commando's . :D Have to get you to keep your eye out for Spitfires and the like on the seabed . :P Theres at least four ' over the side ' in Newzealand .

I think the Epistle is clear & concise , and its in English  Gives a insight intp operation / ownership / & Outlook
at the time . A few hours reading maybe to see what pitfalls await the unwary , also the avoidance of same .

Dog T hits it on the head . You make your luck .

To consider buying one to use as a Honda or suchlike , ( not getting the hands dirty ) going with the reputable merchants
obviously adviseable , if its just a ' recreational vehical / investment '.

For the mechanically inclined and financially constrained , it'll show whats not to be taken for granted .
Used for regular transport / touring etc , a plauge of differant ' service tecnitions ' is liable to lead to disorders,
So ' Self Maintanance ' in regard at least to oil changes is adviseable . Knowing correct adjustments , chains and the like.

Now that's a 'desk' job could be tempted to learn Brooking. Do ya get sent parts that don't fit and counterfiets too? Can you trust all the manuals and diagrams?
Its the giant squid I want to see jet by, the kind than leave 3 ft dia sucker wounds on sperms whales to let loose for easier to swallow meals.

hi Steve, drawings are abit suss sometimes, we get original bits mostly, but boy at a price. The electronice are off the shelf items, thrown in a pressure proof can and sent subsea )these were (and) still are built by Perry the Submarine outfit, I had been to the factory in Jupier in Florida (now in Houston and still building these) some time back to be part of a prototype build for deep water drilling, we took it to Papua New Guinea to do all the preliminary testing for minerals that are produced by underwater 'smokers' Look that up when you get tired of working out how many RPM you think you might get out of Ms Peel. Try the site Nautilus Minerals.
The point being that even these things breakdown, we come up with good long term fixes, but try telling and convincing a guy in the factory that!!!
Engineers are worse as then they have to change all the drawings!!! Yet they still make them, pity Norton got smoked by the Japs back in the day, we may have fibre optic (not fly by wire) throttle control by now!!!!
Back to figuring out if I have bought a "Made in the Back Garage" model!!
Regards Mike

Certainly not the first time I have read those notes, and sure it willn ot be the last. Written with that wonderfully dry british sense of humour, and one thing in particular, I think, should be noted. The two gentlemen who co- wrote those notes had impeccable Norton credentials, and yet they had dissenting opinions on a number of topics. Something to bear in mind next time someone appears to be going against your pet point of view on something Commando (or for that matter, anything)--there may be more than one "right".

And, while I'm on the air, a merry xmas and happy new year to all.

I've been finding all along that what's right for 'you' may not be right for 'me'. Same goes with Commandos.

Happy Holidays
