Hello all,

Thought I would post this one here, rather than e-mail madass140 directly, might well be of interest to other potential purchasers of the master cylinder/brake kit.

I am seriously considering buying either the master cylinder alone, or more likely the complete single front disc brake kit, thing is, I want to fit a either Norton ES2 or vintage Velocette handlebars, which I had on my old MZ and found them just right.

I have a 1973 750 Interstate, and the standard Norton master cylinder has this awful lump, brake light switch, that hits the petrol tank with the above mentioned handlebars, so, I was wondering how the madass140 master cylinder compares?, might someone be able to post a photo showing the underside/clearance around the brake switch area please, would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

John

I may be mistaken John, but I thought the Madass kit supplied a new master cylinder / lever assembly that bolts onto the stock switchgear 'lump' and if so, the clearance to the tank will be no different me thinks!?

Have you checked out what CNW offer? You can buy the whole kit or simply the clamp on Brembo master cylinder... thus allowing you to throw the original 'awful lump' into the furthest field. Which is what I'm doing with mine! Check 'em out at: http://coloradonortonworks.com/part-categories/brakes/

With the huge interstate tank you might have to go for bars with the same ends but with a small rise so you get the same feel but with the clearance. I have the original low UK bars on my MK2A and you can see the bars are not central in the 2 clamps when you get the correct clearance as they are offset 1/2" to the right. MOT tester has a laugh every year he sees it.

Thanks for the reply's,

Eddie, its not the switch gear thats gets in the way, its the actual master cylinder casting that carries the brake light switch, and the brake light switch itself, and to be honest the brake hose itself could really do with not exiting at the downwards angle, I see from the pictures of the madass140 master cylinder that the brake hose exits in line with the master cylinder bore, but can't see where the brake light switch is, it looks like its underneath the brake hose?, is it at a downwards angle like the original?.

Kommando, a small rise with the same handlebar grip angle would be great, but I have never seen a handlebar like that, do not think they are made, saying that, I do not have great experience with lots of bikes, handlebars!, I think I have a set of the earlier low bars you mention, the ones I have, the grip angles are pulled back quite a few more degrees, on the horizontal, than the ES2 vintage type, if you see what I mean.

Its really funny you have you're bars offset, makes perfect sense, but do you ever notice the difference?,

John

The stock master cylinder has a snout for the hose connection and excessively large (auto component) pressure switch. These limit the choice of bar bends and angle of the lever. You can cut off most of the snout, retap the bore to fit a banjo hose fitting with a micro-switch.

Road the bike for 20 years until I moved and used a new MOT tester, he pointed it out and I had never noticed before or felt any issues. As I have cured my 850MK2A from trying to turn hands off and the bars are still offset its not related to that issue either .

Its is the outlet that gets in the way so ML's suggestion may help. There must be a custom handlebar bender around as another solution

I have the Madass kit and the hose connects as you said and the switch is underneath parallel to the hose...Clean setup..

Thanks for you're answers, all very helpful.

ML, thats great!, thanks so much for the photos, I had thought about a similar mod, but its really good to see a photo of it done, looks a nice tidy job, thank you.

A good idea with the custom made bars Kommando, I might well look into that one as well.

Bill, thank you for confirming the madass140 master cylinder outlet locations, just what I needed, thanks.

I think I will go with either a sleeved standard master-cylinder, and do the calliper piston mods as outlined in the great post from Ludwig, thanks for sharing Ludwig!, you have a great Commando, or a Madass140 master-cylinder, with Ludwig's mod.
