In 2016 I bought a new green boxed Lucas RM24 stator and finally I fitted it a couple of weeks ago as the wires on my old one were showing signs of cracking.

To say I am not impressed is absolutely correct. I had to tap the stator on with a rubber mallet and I used some padding to get it onto the studs. It was nigh on impossible to remove it from the studs without gently levering it off. Then there wasn't enough room to turn the nuts due to the green supporting media and the washers wouldn't bottom out and so I had to address this issue. The clearance was tight, so I re-adjusted the rear chain case slightly on the centre supporting stud to get the best clearance and eventually achieved 0.010" around most of the stator / rotor with one area a clear 0.008".

Job done...…...why do these parts not fit out of the box???

But that is not the end of the story. I put about 200 miles on the bike before noticing it was not charging as well as before. On investigation, the stator had melted and a lot of it was in the primary oil and some stuck to the rotor.

In my 42 years of British bike ownership this is the first time I have ever had a failure of the stator. I have fitted quite a few over the years as well.

Having searched the forum, I found this written by Madnorton.
Try fitting the new 3 phase Lucas stator to a MK3 - it does not fit, the old wassell one did.

I know the clearance of 0.008" is the minimum but have never had problems before. Are there a lot of problems associated with these new stators?

I know about the LAP rotors which are apparently better quality, but where can I get one from?

I can't really go back to the supplier as I bought it two years ago.

A not very amused Reggie
