I would like to change the Lucas handle bar switch wires on my Roadster mk2 a 1975.

This is what is fitted to the bike. left switch has 5 wires from main cable and the right hand switch has 6, as the Alton starter is wired on this side. Can anyone please send me a link if I can still purchase replacements for these switches.
I live in the UK.
Thanks Neil.

TimeWarp I think had a display of NOS Lucas switches posted on this forum , not sure they were for sale .... you certainly can modify your original switches to make them function as you wish , bit fiddly but if I could do it anyone can ... good luck

Try Andy Gregory (tricor) he does mainly triumph but does Mk3 Commando switches and also Mk switches. He is in Hereford Tel No 01432820752

Neil, why do you want to change the wires, are they damaged?

There was somebody advertising them on EBay a few months back, but they were each only the 5 wire versions.

Last winter I re-jigged mine. I managed to get the wires out of the grey sleeve, but they are spiral wound so no way I was going to get them back in. I found some sleeve which is very close in colour, and still have some left if you need some.

Cheers,

cliffa.

I would love to know where you found the sleeve. Restoring the consoles is easy and I pay way too much for original cables that I have to go though a big process to make look decent.

I've found cables, but they are one wire short and wrong colors. Getting the right wires is easy, just need the sleeve!

Hi

Hi. I was going to change the wires purely because the main harness was changed in the past, but it still has the original handle bar wires and I figured it would be an easy way to bring up to standard.
The wires that are on the bike are ok and work fine, so I suppose it wouldn’t be the end of the world to leave them alone.
I have seen the wires on eBay for sale but have 6 wires on the right.
Thanks anyway four your valued opinion. Neil

Hi Neil, personally if you are happy with the ergonomics of the switches and they are operating well I would leave them alone. Maybe have a look inside for any signs of corrosion, and give them a cleanup if necessary. The bullet connectors under the tank should be checked to, (I have replaced all of mine with Japanese style 3.9mm tinned bullets). You clean up the grey sheath with Solvol, kitchen cream cleaner. Brasso or Duraglit also work quite well at removing grime.

Cheers,

Greg,
I pulled up the floor in our datacentre and found some old unused computer cable which colour wise was a good match but the sheath is slightly larger (it would take 7 wires). Once installed though you wouldn't give it a second glance. I think I have some left. If you want it, it's yours for the postal cost.

I also purchased 10 metres of this from RS Components for peanuts..

I tried it but it was too small to get 5 wires through, however you could split the wires into two bunches, and once they are fixed to the bars nobody will really notice (well only anoraks).

Cheers,

cliffa.

You can also get heat shrink sleeve in grey, but if the bullets are still on then you cannot get them through so only of use if you either remove and then renew the bullets or unsolder from the switch plate.

Replacing the bullets is no big deal and something I often do anyway. But, I've never found heat shrink that looks or acts like the original cables which are more white than grey and quite flexible.
