I'm thinking of making my own LR Fastback Gas Tank. I have a steel roadster tank that came with the bike and a line on a Atlas tank. Now before I take this project on, has anyone tried it before with any valuable feedback. I would like to know exactly how to map the line on when to cut the tank, and if there is going to be any dolling to make both halfs fit.

Any feedback would be great!!!

Have a look at how they make tanks in places like India and Pakistan..........factory tanks were made using very costly press tools, so cannot be used for small scale manufacture.

There should be ' many ' interplod tanks about .is L.R. with Toast Rack , or L.R. is Interplod Without rack .
Might save a good deal of stuffing around . A Interstate seat modded would work well with it perhaps .
Think the cop ones had knee grips , which arnt a bad idea for enthusiastic rideing .

A dented Domi tank could be Cheap ? Putting in a new underside , as the metals simple bends & flats ,
easy job to knock dents out if its not stretched , while the bottoms awol .

He's not talking about making a production run, just customizing a single tank.

I have a genuine Long range fast back tank if you require any info.

Any chance of a photo of the underside of your long range tank please ?

I too have an Atlas tank, and was contemplating that removing the base and welding in a tunnel to suit the Commando frame should not be that difficult.
Its the lumps and bumps to suit/clear various bits that are the tricky bit.

Cheers.

I would contact Ross Thompson. He makes a new bottom to fit the Commando frame and the Atlas top

Yes Ross T does them. I did speak to him re a tank, he also sent me some photos.
Sounds like a genuine guy. Once again, it's that round figure... $1000.00 + ish.
Plus postage. Quite like the look. for a non standard affair.

Thanks, photo would be very useful.
Have fun with the Mk 3.

I've never had the impression that the LR tank was anything but a factory cut & shut job but I don't have detailed knowledge of how the slimline tank looks underneath. Construction of the LR tank shows a greater likeness to the tanks of the 1930s than the (Italian ? ) pressings used on most steel Commando tanks

The tank's not on the bike at the moment. If you need any measurements, just ask ( let me know inch or mm)

The LR tank will either need raising at the front or the use of the early single-sided coil bracket to obtain clearance. This seems to have been an issue on late LRs that was not resolved.

Thanks for the pic.
Complicated underneath isn't it ?
Lot of little welded-in additions to get clearance to various bits.

Plus the original tanks had LEFT hand fillers.

As did early slimline featherbed tanks.

So if you fill it up and then put it on the sidestand, gives a good test if the fuel cap leaks or not. And if the breather hole is now below the high tide mark.

Always thought that was a bit of very dubious engineering, wonder why they did that ?
