Hi all, i dont suppose anyone (particularly in australia) has a knackered LR Fastback Fuel Tank they'd be prepared to part with .... metal rusted through (but still holds it's shape) or ethanol'd fiberglass would be fine .... i just need 1 to make a mold

Bahh .

Theyre a Bit Wide , and hold your knees out .
Its the UNDERSIDE thats the fancey bit ,
If folded steel is fancey !

The TOP is Dommie . Further - the Dommie Badges'd dress it up . PLUS its a Interplod issue TOO .
Really needs knee cut outs , perhaps .

Them bits wotter up underit , are knocked in to clear the ead steady . The grooty bits in the topper the tunnel are rubber things .
Otherinthat , the step in under the front , the rear frame cllearance recesses , tap mounts 7 Fr mount freds , theres a highly
sophisticated dimple both sides , you can see easier on the top there .

BUt its One of These , Moit .

But this is the channeld small one , wots much better looking . So if you do'it like this , wiff the curvey lower seam .
When you make your second million , you can send one to me ( Million . ! AND a Tank . Thanks . )

Thems wots gottem .

AND , you can see how stupid THIS LOOKS . Whereas - If you LOOSE the front rige , and bring it out aft to match the later bigger square tail lamp .
AND do a narrower lower seat ( so you can reach the ground without sliding sideways ) you wont have your foot slip on the gravel so you have to\declutch as you clutch hands slipped ,
and its taking off - but you get your foot on the pegs - and stop . As your hand slipped on the throttle , and as the clutch take ups rpm dependant , it looked like you were going to
punch a hole in the building across the road there . For a moment .

So Pay attention . :)

Whereas IF you gettit MORE LIKE THIS , Itll be a lot better . Moit .

A bit like these two inna da blender .

Nose cut out for maximum lowness - to suit side covers - or custom ones .
forget the race plates . straight aft from bum stop - - to lamp - without the
missmatched humpy curve aft like wots std - THERE .
That way the seat wont look like it fell off a pre war Harley - too .

Just the bootom FLAT at the rear frame underside - like . You dont want numbers there , or theyll catch you . ;)

LR Fastback tank
You can see the SEAT PAD is a trifle less bulbous .

THERE . gedout a blocka styrofoam & a rasp .

hi, thanks for the detailed reply ... are you saying the LR is just a dommie tank top with commando base?
i already made a tank for my commando (carbon fiber with modern resins, based on a wideline dommie tank ) & it fitted fine (& looked pretty damn good too in my opinion) .... until i changed the front end (long story) ... doesn't fit anymore.
if the height near the yolk is going to be the same as my current (dommie wideline based) tank, that wont work any better than my current tank.
if thats the case i could use the dommie mold again & modify it (so it sits lower) ... or i could use my fiberglass fastback tank as a model to make a new mold
oh & modifying the seat length isn't an issue (already shortened)

The bottom is actually a series of flat plates and a couple of bent plates all welded together, Homers of Birmingham made them in low volumes hence the various plates instead of a single pressing for the bottom.

Good to have confirmation of my prezumption , Baz. Thanks .

This is the MORE STYLISH 1962 untidy states version , Atlas / Manxman etc .Id think worth a go . Would be unique , Commandoally . :)

Sleek , rakeish , refined . And the tanks not bad , either .
Looks like the ' std ' with the lower reworked,

That's a nice looking tank but very different from the dommie/atlas style with no edge seam on the bottom

Thanks for the pic, I'm working on doing the same thing with an old Atlas tank I have. I cut out the old atlas tank bottom and my plan is to roll the tunnel, make the flat plates and weld everything together. From looking at various photo's of LR tanks it appears as if the front of my Atlas tank "scallops" will need to be narrowed so it will fit the tunnel and the rear of the tanks will have to be cut out and modified to fit over the frame tube. I am in the fab stage for the bottom and I'm using plywood and thinner gage metal to build a mockup (fit) with a completed final welded one to follow. Four or five years ago at Mid Ohio I ran across a guy selling the version with the radio rack for around $80, I kick myself for not buying it. I have a friend whose family makes reproduction muscle car sheet metal and I talked to him about making a die and stamping out tank bottoms but the cost puts it out of my reach.

I have 3 of these tanks with the radio cut-out so can provide dimensions, also the seat is an Interstate seat with the ears moved back to bring the seat forward. You can see on the photo the old ear location by the remains of the welds and the new position. The depression for the oil cap is now in the wrong place but it clears it anyway.

Thanks, any dimensions you can provide would be great and I'll send you a PM so we don't high jack this thread. I appreciate the tip about the interstate seat which I do have, and I also think that with some work I can use my Corbin seat. I've always liked the look of the Atlas tank. My Roadster tank is beautiful, but the volume is a bit to small and the Interstate tank is a bit too big.
Thanks again
Dave

Two of these , chopped into a P R style tank , or one extended in the middle , gets rid if dings & foots the bill . Couldnt give them away , centuries ago .

Just add six or ten inches , at the fat part . So its a foot longer .
