Two reasons, the dealer removed it at the last service I can't get hold of him as he is in the process of moving premises
Or its unscrewed and it's somewhere in the frame oil tank.

Assuming the worst can it do any damage sitting in the oil tank?

Yes , it is possible to have the dip stick unscrew from the dip stick cap . You have found the cap with no dipstick installed right ? Both of my dip sticks could unscrew with little effort. I have found that the stick needs to be secured with locking agent into the cap . If the stick is in the oil tank , it should pose no harm in my estimation . If you completely drain the tank and put the bike on a steep downward incline , you may be able to see it through the fill hole and recover with magnet or mechanical fingers ? A warning to others that have not checked , Loctite the stick into the cap (I used red )! A suitable 5mm bolt can be used until you can get a replacement.

It is larger then the tank opening so I don't believe it possible to be in there!

Sorry its the metal stick that screws into the cap. The tank filler caps is still there, I would have noticed if it was missing after the service, its just the too short metal 'stick' part of the assembly.

I'll get a 110mm long bolt and cut the head off.

Skiddy,
Go to supercheap auto and get a magnet on a flexible shaft .
The shaft is about 500mm long and will bend around the corner into the tank.
from there it should stick to the end of the dipstick to retrieve it.
I have had one in my garage for a few years, great for grabbing bolts that drop into hard to reach places when working on projects.
Or if you like come down the Gold Coast for a visit and borrow mine.

cheers

"How did you go with the dipstick ??"

I've had a couple of fishing attempts but no luck so far, I'll make a concerted effort this weekend. It is a tight turn going into the neck of the frame/oil tank, so there is no feel of what is happening.

Good news is with a 500mm long flexible shaft I can reach the oil !
