Hi, been lurking here for a few months and read back a few years of posts. I had a 68 Fastback and a 750 roadster in the early 70s. Retiring soon, now I have the time to work on another bike. I am looking at a 72 Fastback LR . Never knew about this model. I want to return it to Fastback trim but not the LR. Most of the bike is there but it has been stored 15 years. Can someone verify what the designated model for this motorcycle was from the factory by the engine number?

201182 (frame matches)

Thanks Brian

One of these tanks with a new floor / tunnel , even lengthened . If you are into a bit of metalwork would match the L R

( Does it HAVE the Steel Tank ?? if the motorcycles not butchered and hasnt suffered violence , BUY IT . even if its aA WRECK )

The Look of the First PRODUCTION ones were Kin to These ;

Hi Brian,
My guess is that you will need to contact NOC or AN. They do charge for the info. Don't know if they will have the info you require.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

OK! Now I understand????

Why not simple say "no" and omit the confusing pics and diatribe?

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

Contrary to Popular Belief , one of the two ' pre production ' Silver Frame / Orange seat Fastbacks ended up Flown to the Auckland Motorshow .

Was ;' the talk of the town ' ( Village ) particularly when a first year school teacher ( a STRANGER there - gossip gossip ) negotiated to Purchase It .

Hold up was THE BADGES .

2 week expectation turned to TWO DAYS - they were in Whanganui NOT England . So I saw it outside the Brownsbay ( Brownsy )Post Office on its first Friday in the ' public domain ' .

Did 43.000 Miles in two years . Laid Up under his house after that . You could just see it driving past. If you looked hard enough .
At that stage He had said the Green Badges might still be in the envelope in the draw where He'd put them when he got it .

A few years later than that He'd sol it , for I think 18.000 . Paid 2.200 for it . If ive got that right .

Only Mechanical troble he'd had was having to stop and ajust the points ( nudge nudge , wink wink ) Thus Admiring the Sunset on the Cliffs of the West Coast . With the Bird .

Id Thought ' Cheze Le Feme ' was " THERES A WOMAN AT THE BOTTOM OF IT " which was about right .

It was not thought by a certain southerner That the Honda would be sufficent inducement for the hearthrob to risk her reputation ( With all the Small town GOSSIP )
nor be sufficently adept on the unsealed rural roads , to justify its Purchase .

The Norton Did the Trick .

Talk of the Town .

Often in the Rangitoto Colledge teachers carpark , particularly on Fridays  The envy of many .

Later one of his Disciples ( Ex Students ) I saw , from the boat shed , Pull the ront end of His Combat right up leaving his place after its initial service ( 1974 ) in his hands .
Had traded a H1 500 Kwacker for a one owner 5.000 black Combat Roadster . And was leaving Town ( the Lad - 18 )
The Comando had minor scrapes and abrasions so was 1800 against 1500 for the HAMMERED 500 with 20.000 od miles on it . The rings'd go in another 5.000.
But Itd be out of warrenty .
So the associates were saying . Outside the Post Office . One thursday or friday afternoon .
He hawked it round the hard left and up again , Gas On .

SO , if anyone knows AKEHURST , Has He Still GOT the Green Blob Badges ?
================================================================
rest here reminissing ;

By the way , a twelve year olds Question in the Honda Shop there , if the two ones with oil trays under them were old wrecks , was

" No , there worth a lot of money , they all do that. Theyre NOT for SALE . Theyre OURS . " a silver Mercury and another Matchey 650 or Norton .

At Times you'd see the Local Bank Manadger hunting for gears & the powerband on his cheap tinny H1 at the corner out of the bridge along there .
He'd traded in a Matchless 350 .
Woe & betide .
Im sure it had vynl panniers & racks .
And I saw what looked like a nervous wreck on it when I had my Commando. Up by the Golf Course .
The KR 76 on the Front of my LR meant youd observe people in bustops over your elbow running the bends ( Constant Radius ) through the East Coast Bays Road .
Ones undivided attention, should however be kept on the road .
The other three H1 riders , romour had it , were buried young .

Where ' the Shed ' is is where I stayed , going to Tech , on the LR with 2S cam , Mk II Amals ( 32 mm ) custom intakes & 32 tooth gearing . 80 mph ' sweet spot ' ( leading Throttle )
The Open road started up the ridge of the hills in back of there .

OBVIOUSLY if You Had 3.000.000 DOLLARS to SPEND on a boardwalk , youd put in a one kilometer + overun at the seafromnt there . ( First house I lived in was at the beach there ,
at what'd be The MIDDLE .  )

No Vision , the polititions these days . They need to be made of sterner stuff . And keep the riff raff out . Even if they are moneyed ( the riff raff ).

:)

You didnt get the blinged up stuff , in those days .

Though there was a metallic blue Honda CB 350 Chopper chromed twisted Sq Springer front & K & Q seat'n all . :? :( in the bike shop there awhile . hard to shift . 1500 bucks or so .

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

I bought it.

Thanks Matt and all.Have pics but i can't post them here. Its a 72 made in NOV 71 It does have the raised lug for the engine number. A disc brake. Upswept roadster exhaust with dunstall mufflers. Has the big tank, no ears fastback seat, tail is missing but there is a chrome rear fender.

bike is running

I'll pick it up in a few weeks.

My first Commando was 201123 with Oct 71 build on the ID plate, not far from your new toy. If you are going to build a '72 fastback, the correct rear fender is hard to find and painted black. It's shorter than the chrome fenders.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

I bought a 71 drum brake model also advertised as a LR with tail piece missing ,it was actually an Interpol .

There was a lot up with that bike but if you have as much fun with your new bike as I am having with mine it is money well spent! Good luck .

The photo was taken in the sellers garage not mine.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

Unless you go with an Indian made tank then a Fastback tank will be Fibreglass and you will get all the issues with E5 and E10 petrol, the LR tank is steel so I would be keeping it as an LR Fastback. The added range from the larger tank is useful, there are Interpol single seats available as well to allow extra space for load carrying.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

The LR is also a much rarer model. I've only ever seen pictures of drum brake LRs. This is the first I've heard of with a disc. Rarity.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

I use the Interpol tank, its the LR tank with a cut out on the top for a a radio.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

Did the long Range tank have the creases down the top either side?

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

Yes, the LR and Interpol tanks are Dominator/Atlas tanks with a base to suit a Commando and the Dominator/Atlas has the 2 scallops down the side, but no badge mounting holes in the Commando version.

Re: Looking to buy a Fastback LR but unfamiliar with the mod

The lr fastback is much rarer I'm sure I read somewhere only 400 built? If you buy it and restore it to fastback spec you really have no choice but buy an Indian made tank as others have said, but be very wary of what you buy these tanks don't have the best reputation, obviously you will need the seat with the ears aswell cheers baz
