I've got my bearings on order, but I'm having trouble finding a few shims that I may need, don't know how many until I get my bearings, and then it will be another week or so of waiting. Where's a good source to get a selection coming?
Thanks,

JD

What we use are rear iso shims. They're cheap enough to but an assortment of sizes. Look to your Norton suppliers for help.

Clarification please...

I'm going to do the roller layshaft bearing replacement and would like a bit of clarification on measuring end clearance.

Is the clearance measured simply by the in-out movement of the kickstart shaft inn relation to the cover?

The reason I ask is that the 2 Commandos in my garage have a very noticeable push-pull movement at the kickstart shaft.
I measured the movement at approximately 0.058".

Is this correct?

Yes.

Thanks.
I wonder how many bikes out there are running with way more than 0.005" clearance?

Once you open up the inner cover look to the kick start bushing and the 1st gear bushing and you will more than likely find them in need of replacement with that much play.
The roller bearing mod is a simple thing to shim. Install the roller, new bushings in both parts, assemble just the lay shaft with all the gears, install the inner cover and then measure the amount of side play.
Add enough shims to give you .005" side play.
The rear iso shims work for this but may need the ID to be opened up to fit the shaft. A dremel tool works great or even a round file.
I doesn't have to be perfect as the shims don't rotate, they just take up slack.
Old brits has a great how to to guide you thru.

My gearbox is apart right now and I have roller bearing and shims on order. For reference, I had .027 endplay before I took mine down.
No problems noticed, but I'm aiming for .005-.010 with the new bearing.

The face of the kickshaft and the face of the 1st gear lay are not nor imtended to be bearing/thrust surfaces. .005 is too aggresive and would stay outside of .010 and closer to .015 IMHO.
