L Emery does this longer version of a Dominator brake lever, but it's £28.50 before P&P.

Longer SLS brake actuating lever

Anyone know of something similar that won't cost so much? Doesn't have to be stainless.

I'm not sure the longer lever will work well in my opinion.

I have the Ferodo shoes in and they are fully bedded and the brake works as well as can be expected. I have very little free play in the cable but yet I can still almost get the lever back to the bars when I squeeze really hard. If I were to use a longer actuating lever, the brake lever would come back to the bars so much easier and I would lose full movement and therefore full braking.

A longer lever needs longer travel.

What to look for on brake shoes, excess gap between shoes and brake drum when mounted on spindle.

This is more common than you think except for those in the know; it can be cured quite cheaply by making wrap around slippers for the flat section, otherwise brake shoes fitted with oversize linings then mounted on a lathe, with .020 tho shims in each flat then shoes/linings skimmed down to the exact diameter of the brake drum, remove the shims, file a 30 degree chamfer to each leading edge of the linings. Either way will work a treat on improving the stopping performance of the anchors

Spot on Bernhard. you will find most bought shoes are undersize. I purchase new shoes then have 1/4" linings bonded
then do exactly as you say. All my brakes are done this way.
