Hi Folks,

Need help finding a suitable way to put a license plate on a 1972 Commando. This has the earlier tail light so it has the bracket with the small ears. However, I am not sure of the best way to mount the license plate. Does anybody have any good ideas, or a place to buy one?

Thanks much!

I made a sub-plate out of AL same size as the license plate with extra holes in it for mounting it on the assembly, then set the license plate off with longer 1/4-24 bolts and nuts between the license plate and sub-plate. If you need pics I can get them easy enough.

Dave,

I figured I would probably have to fab something up. I sure would appreciate pics of yours.

Thanks!

CNW makes a nice full-width mounting plate that replaces the stock one. I have one on my 750. Check out their website.

Of course you can fab up something yourself for next to nothing but it won't look as clean. :)

debby,

How does the CNW mount?

You disassemble the taillight and the CNW piece replaces the stock piece that the license plate bolts to. I think I have the old skinny piece in my junk parts box. I can take a photo later and post it.

That would certainly be the least expensive solution!

I think I did that too, initially. When I took the bike down for the restoration I went ahead and splurged on the CNW piece.

I also went to the CNW bracket (because the stock one cracked apart). It's nice and well made like all of their stuff. I bought it used on this forum and the price was just right. I have a PA antique MC plate and it is a different shape and size than a standard MC plate (the holes don't match either) so I had to make a sub plate out of aluminum behind the license plate anyway. I've had to do this for all my bikes except the HD which has a standard plate.
