legitimise your dodgy Vincent for only £5000

Vincent V5C registration document for sale on Ebay UK for £5000.

Very strange reading the details in the advert. The V5C is for a 1951 Vincent but the frame ,which in the UK is the part that carries the identity of a vehicle, is from a Manx Norton so somebody has managed to get the frame number changed on the V5C .Only the V5C is being sold for £5000 which begs the question
where is the bike that this document belongs to ,which, on the DVLA website ,was last on the road in 1994.If it was broken up the V5C should have stayed with the frame.If it was stolen or scrapped the V5C should have been returned to DVLA. The vendor is technically leaving himself open to prosecution under section 44 of the Serious Crimes Act 2007 as he is offering to sell something that the only use for it is to change the identity of another vehicle which is illegal.
Quite surprised Ebay haven't pulled the ad as it is probably in breach of their terms.
 
Does seem completely scummy. I will copy to the Vincent site. The registrar for the club follows that site, he might take it up.

It certainly should be reported.

I'd want to know about it if one of my bikes had anything to do with it...

This is not quite true, yes, it could be used as you describe, but far more likely to be of interest to someone who wants to build a Norvin with a new frame and an engine built up from parts and keep a period reg.

It is not illegal to put an existing ID onto a new frame, in fact it is required. If you buy a new frame from Honda et al, they come without identity (for the same reasons that you state).
 
It may not be illegal to put existing ID on to a new frame if you also own an old damaged frame with the ID you want to use,and subsequently destroy it,but in this case the vendor is only selling the log book nothing else. Somewhere there is the frame that this ID belonged to.If you stamp the ID on to a new frame you are in effect creating a cloned vehicle with the same Identity which is illegal. If the original bike was either scrapped or permanently exported the V5C should have been returned to DVLA.If it was broken up for spares then the original frame may still exist and the ID belongs to that frame

Here we have the skeleton of a Vincent Rapide.
The Rear Frame Member and Headstock are original Vincent Rapide and have matching and correct 1950 frame numbers.
Crucially, I also have the VE60 Log Book and both the Rear Frame Member and Headstock match the numbers in the log book.
This bike started life as a 1950 Vincent Rapide and was registered in August 1950. At some point the engine was removed and placed into a Vincent Egli - I bought the frames and log book from the gentleman who owns the Egli. Importantly, the details on the VE60 were not placed onto the DVLA computer and therefore the original registration number should be obtainable. The registration number is a nice three letter and two digit number.
I have recently purchased a new Rapide/Black Shadow set of crank cases - these are the same cases that the Vincent Owners Club sell for £3,500+ VAT. They are perfect in every way and (importantly) are unstamped. My plan therefore was to build the Rapide up and get her road registered but my plans have now changed and therefore I will have to sell the complete kit.
According to the log book, the original bike had an engine replaced at some point early in it's life and therefore the engine number of the log book is from a 1949 Rapide, it is that engine that was subsequently fitted into the Egli. My plan was to utilize the original engine numbering from when it left the factory when rebuilding the bike (engine numbers on a Vincent are basically the Frame Number Minus 1900). Also, once you have obtained the V5C it would be relatively straight forward to revert to utilizing the original engine numbering (far more difficult with frame numbers - if not impossible).
The frame parts are in excellent condition with no cracks, breaks or bends etc.
This project is not cheap but is reflective of what I think it is worth. To build this back up would cost another £10,000-£15,000 but then you would have a bike worth over £40,000.




I have been a Vincent Owners Club member for many years and have owned a number of Rapides and am therefore well aware of how rare an opportunity like this is.




Willing to consider a swap for other British bikes with cash either way.

Only if its not already sold as a 'Cherished Plate' .

Also its a pity the engine number could be already in use.
