What was a small and slightly irritating fuel leak from the tank cap has become a lot worse.
I thought the fuel was coming out around the cap seal but it's actually leaking from the base of the neck.

This is an aluminium tank with a monza style cap

Does anyone know how to take this apart and recommend a fuel resistant sealant assuming it can be stripped.

I'm hoping I can do this without wrecking the paint.

Thanks, mine's got exactly the same issue. It was bought a long time ago but there's a good chance it also came from RGM as in the other thread.

Will try the JB Weld approach.

Cheers

Rich

When I google for JB weld, I get a range of products (UK), Original Epoxy, hi heat epoxy, reinforced epoxy putty, which is the one that all you guys talk about?

I used the plain old JB weld to patch a leak in my tractor's gas tank. It has been leak free for 2 years so far.

Nevermind.... it started leaking today It actually softened the jb-weld!!! I can't believe it. The gas here is terrible.

I used sealsall on my tank 4years ago ... still good ... not sure about ethanol content ... maybe as high as 5% here but it has held since applied ... however this is a fibre glass tank, but tube says it works on all sorts of materials ... I found it particularly hard to work with but once on and shaped it has stayed put

Decided to take the filler cap off and get to the bottom of the problem.
The whole cap and neck came off with almost no effort. The adhesive just crumbled to dust.

Main reason for the leaks was that the spigot in the tank the cap neck was glued to had deep V cuts down to the level of the top of the tank - sorry no pics
The glue was directly exposed to the fuel so didn't really stand a chance.

I've had a friend with a TIG welder sort out the neck and some other cosmetic issues that were bugging me, but now have respray on my hands.

If I wanted an easy life I'd buy a Honda

Rich.

Any chance of a few pictures to help? I've a Monza cap on my (now spare) alloy tank. I remember it was araldited around the tank neck to stop leaks, and that certainly worked ok, but was maybe 10 years ago, so the newer fuels may attack that.

Hi rich

Your bike looks well. The threaded adaptor snapped in the middle when I was removing a fuel tap didn't fancy trying to remove the half still in , so roughly epoxyed it in haven't dressed it yet will do after I get the tank lined ,maybe I should check the cap first.

Leaking Filler Neck

The exterior of the tank is gummy at the bottom seam and the exterior is woeful but I want to use this tank.
Did my metal replacement tank with por15 2 years and holding well.
