Maybe a strange question but are FAG 6203TB.63 ball bearings all of equal quality. This is the bearing p/n recommended by Mick Hemmings as a replacement layshaft bearing instead of going down the roller bearing route.
Reason for the question is the variation in price from $18 to $40. Both have the polymide cage. Is this something I should be checking further?
I have just dismantled my 850 Mk11a gearbox and the original layshaft bearing (still on the shaft) has no play and rotates smoothly and the cage appears ok, but will be replaced as a matter of course.
Next, what is the easiest way to remove the bearing from the layshaft if I don't have a puller? Any tips.

Thanks in anticipation
Steve

Why think about the price diffrences if you want it to last a life time pay the extra $22 small amount if you ask me, I replaced my layshaft bearing 34 years ago and is still going good after 120,000 miles.

Mick hemmings knows his shit but for $22, I wouldn't blink at the better option. Gearbox failure at 60mph or $22.

Do the math.

Don't forget to address the possible issue of a loose layshaft bearing if it came out with the shaft with no heat applied....... 8)

Lever it off using two flat blade screwdrivers or thin wedges inserted between the bearing and 4th gear, 180 degrees apart.

The last time I bought layshaft rollers I went to the local bearing shop, they had access to both the plastic cage and the brass cage ones for a reasonable price.

Vendors for Norton parts get them from bearing suppliers then surely tack on extra to make a profit etc.. I am thankful for the Norton specific parts vendors sell, but when it comes to commercially available parts and supplies it would be more stand-up of them to just refer those in need to the proper suppliers.

Or, offer 1-stop shopping convenience at reasonable prices, like they do.

If you want them to be stood up next year when you need Norton specific parts, don't be grudge them profit on the service they provide in stocking what you need, and having detailed knowledge most of us don't have.

I wonder just how grateful you would be if you walked into Mick Hemming shop on a Saturday afternnon and asked for a number of items including a bearing and got the response, 'no I don't stock those, you can get them from a bearing factor'.....

Which in the UK at least, even if there was one local it would be firmly shut by Saturday afternoon....you would need to order on line and pay postage or take time from work and lose money that way....

Frankly, your comment is ludicrous....If you choose to go to a bearing factor that is up to you...I might do the same....but I would surely want to know that a Norton specialist supplier worth his salt invested in stocking all items for when customers need them...
