Someone got a bargain, still a future classic , but all classics cars & bikes go thru the “ unwanted there crap stage “ maybe we are in that atm , someone has said on here that the 961 is the Delorean of bikes , maybe it is , I wish the new owner well & hope to see him on ere soon

Somebody definitely got a bargain. Would’nt have a clue about the US market but this is the only comparable 961 I can find in Aus (USD 14500) that sold recently (I think). There are a few ex-demos for sale but they are much more expensive. Disappointing for the original owner methinks!

Maybe it’s because it’s red. We all know black is way cooler right? Got to be worth an extra 5k in black! Just sayin - not expecting any comeback!:oops:

I paid pretty much the same. Few more k's but decat and short pipes, also a 2015 sport.

Good buy then mate. I paid full retail at the time (early 2017 ) for a new (2015) CR - AUD 29.5k. Not sure why, but later CR‘s were up to 34k + ORC?

Money well spent as far as I’m concerned. Technical issues - a few small (if irritating) ones. Enjoyment of ownership - priceless!

Surely most serious potential buyers would do a bit of research and establish the lack of spares and support etc.
That has to effect prices.
Thats bad if you’re selling, good if you’re a serious buyer.
I reckon they’ll pick up again.
If TVS start selling improved spares prices will surely rise.
If TVS don’t, surely the aftermarket will step in to supply, and prices will rise.

This is the big question in my mind. Surely TVS won't just let go of the 961 and let Jinlang have it ? And who will make the 961 frames now ? Hopefully made in UK or right there at Norton Birmingham .
 
It is very interesting that Jinlang has had the rights to produce the 961 engine for several years now, but nothing has materialized yet from that agreement. Especially seeing as how quickly many Chinese factories can steal IP, copy and turn-out bootlegged versions of other products. Jinlang has legal rights to the 961, but has to date, produced nothing.
I think the whole 961 issue for TVS is a becoming a bit of a problem of their own creation.

They will produce and sell 40 units of the 961 for only those individuals who had pending orders with the SG's Norton firm prior to the wrap up. These units, presumably will have "better" component parts than their predecessor 961's. This will provide TVS-Norton the confidence to offer warranties to the owners. How will TVS-Norton come by these better components?

Were there sufficient spare 961 components left over from Norton-SG to assemble 40 units?
We know SG sourced components from Taiwan and India, is TVS sourcing new components from there for the 40 new units?
Is the factory, right now doing R&D with some suppliers to "fix" the most problematic 961 components?
If so, why couldn't TVS simply indicate which re-designed components will work in older 961's.
If they feel that the revised 40 units are worthy of warranting, why would they not offer to continue production until demand for the 961 ceases all together?
 
If they have one of the new 961's at any of the shows, hopefully someone on here can get close to it and take about a million detailed photos so we can see what's changed.

We don’t know what Jinlang license is for. Maybe it is only to provide Norton with engines ?

Dunno.

But surely if they had the freedom to use it in other applications, they would have done so by now? They must recognise TVS’s paralysis as their opportunity ?! They could surely have gotten a cut price 961 copy to the market?

The Chinese don’t normally miss opportunities like that.

So it makes me wonder if all their license allows, is supply to Norton.

I certainly hope it’s not worse than that… ie a license to supply some tenuously linked ‘Norton’ company owned by SG !?!

End of last summer I had a pre arranged visit from a couple of TVS guys , had a great chat & shared my highs & lows of 961 ownership , they were keen to hear my tales of great times & the not so great , your right Brit twit bout inherited pile of spare parts & built those 961 classics pretty quickly, BUT , no way is there 40 , not from what I can make out . My faults have been, parasite drain on battery, battery/tank support bracket broken ( twice ) de cat pipe broken bracket ( twice) & pipe broken, minor fueling issue on running ( but lamda delete resistors soughted that) and that spring that broke up on back of clutch basket that damaged the balence shaft gear & crank gear ( outrageous banging noise occurring at 50mph ) , stopped immediately.
So thinking about that last issue , the bike could of locked up thrown me off & then goodnight Vienna , the TVS guys were gathering info from a few owners at the time & took my comments seriously.
Nine months on now & still no delivery of the 961 Classic I can only think that they were concerned bout releasing these last few bikes & one of them causing them legal & publicity problems if someone fell off as result of a faulty bike & suffered injury or death !
So I imagine they must of improved the quality of the clutch springs ,strengthen the other parts that broke at the very least . Hence that pile of spares they may have can’t be sold with them knowing that there are documented existing faults with some of the 961 design , such a shame & really tbh with the combined effort of all here on ACCESS NORTON particularly from Richard 7 & his dad /Ian Wilson from NZ who both directly tried to help & support Skinner & his team where things could be improved, it was Richard 7 that first discovered the fake sensors being used & the absence of a transmissIon vent that caused serious oil leaks . Richard put one on my bike at 1000 miles , 10 weeks later my bike had covered 9,500 miles without any issues / oil leaks etc ,the factory serviced the bike & after that all the bikes started having transmission vents fitted from new .
So basically the answers to a perfect 961 are on this forum already.

Very interesting Blighty. I guess there is also the added complication of the ‘hand built @Donnington‘ factor. Whilst some have had various and significant (nay catastrophic) failures, others have had little or no issues. What’s the difference: Minor changes as the years progressed; who built it and on what day of the week, mileage? Who knows.

Historical stuff aside, the key question I suppose is whether they intend to continue production of the 961 beyond the (unknown number of) Classics. As you say, they have been handed most of the fixes on a plate, from 10 years of Beta Testing by us lot - you don’t getter better intel than that! Interesting words from their article on the other thread “…… imminent launch of the re-engineered V4SV and 961 Commando.” Again, who knows.
