Pulling the head to give to my mechanic, first time doing this. All bolts, nuts off except center one. Appears to be so close to one side that socket won't go on. Any advice?

Thanks, grinding a socket worked. Having trouble clearing the push rods, any advice on that?

Raise the head enough to allow you to detach the upper ends of all four pushrods from the rockers, then feed the pushrods up into the head as far as they will go and hold them in that position as you lift the head off, tilting it backwards as you go (see manual, Section C1, Fig.C3.).

Another pair of hands makes this job easier although one person can do it.

Having trouble clearing the push rods,
Assuming you manage to get the head off using LAB's advice (he is correct) I suggest you then check the pushrods for damage and straightness if you have been fighting to get the head off. HTH

Thanks, that did the trick. Will have the rods looked at, but didn't force them, better to grab some coffee and ask for help. Appreciate the guidance, this might be the year it's back on the road.

In the future, remove the front engine mounting stud (ISO bolt), with support under the frame and a small jack under the engine you can actually lower the engine enough to make head removal much easier.

Using a bungee helps immensely, as it can act as a second pair of hands to hold the head levitating above the jugs whilst you fiddle with the pushrods. When you go back together, instead of the rubber bands as the manual suggests, use a piece of stout twine with layers of masking tape wrapped around both ends to wedge the pushrods against the alloy of the head to hold them up inside. Then, using the same bungee cord, the head and gasket can be set into place without much drama. At that point, the string pulls the tape plugs from the holes, the pushrods fall against the lifters, and the head is finally lowered into place. Thank Pete.V for the pushrod retainers. what-t24164-30.html#p318092
