I'm replacing the kickstand attachment plate on my 71 which has the peg type of mounting with one from Old Brits that has the bolt through type. Any ideas on how to remove the old one without damaging the frame tubes.

Sounds like you mean side stand, not kick stand.
Did you read the article? https://www.oldbritts.com/38_200002.html
Are you looking for more detail on this step?? "The first step is to remove the old bracket by cutting and grinding off the old bracket, trying not to damage the frame tubes."
I think the answer is do it with the frame stripped and turned upside down. Start with a hacksaw, leave a wide margin to be removed with a small disk grinder, and finish with a file. I did this years ago and can't add much more than that.
I think to do it with an assembled bike would be a pain in the ass, but maybe others have found a good way.

Yes side stand. Thanks Stephen, I will start with the hacksaw instead of the grinder. Frame is stripped.

My 71 was the same, I got the new bracket off Old Britts.

Cut what you can off, go close with a grinder if you feel confident (I am a boilermaker/welder) then finish with FILES.

Knock any weld down filing along the weld until you are close to the tube surface, then across with a rolling action.
Finish with a length of emery tape (1" wide) around the tube then the same in a 45 degree cross hatch X pattern.
