Ah come on guys !!!

Show a little mercy :-)

Im stuck in the middle of a desert in Kazakhstan and you are playing with these toys !!!!!

We've all go to go through hardship, it is called 'character building'. You will come out of it a much better person. Lawrence of Arabia was a motorcyclist, and he loved the desert and those nice Arabs who live there.

We are all survivers from the very first life on Earth but all life styles are fatal in the end. If ya can see some relief in life in the future, with help from others, then can hang in there. A place to be, things to do and stuff to look forward too. Alan you realize all race Seeleys are similar if they have a Norton type twin engine so can't expect much response to you pointing this out.

Actually my Grandfather spent 3 years in the desert with the 15 Company Imperial Camel Corp and then the Fifth Australian Light Horse (even though he was in a NZ unit). From Cairo to Damascus, including fighting alongside Lawrence of Arabia. (Who they didnt have a terriably high opinion of!)

http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/war/camel-c ... -companies

And he came back completely screwed up !!

At least he missed Galipoli - unlike his brother who was wounded and invalided out and never returned to active sevice.

When I think of that I know that I have a life of total luxury compared to them !

I've seen threads take strange turns but man o man........

Anyhow, what is the total investment on this masterpiece? Anyone care to give a rough estimate? Kenny?

From my research, just the motor is about $10K.
I would estimate about $30K for the whole bike.

Did I win the showcase?

I think you're light.

I believe he probably receives discounts ans has many sponsors.
Are we talking his cost or a retail out the door price.

Either way I am sure it is out of most of out budgets and lifestyles.

Fair cop !! This made me laugh outloud :-))

Id say a lot more than $30 k if you were the average punter paying full price. The gearbox alone would cost you a good $5 k with import duty.

This is not Kmart nor Walmart. I am reasonably sure that with Kenny's endeavor, the discounts available to him, if any, are not significant. He runs a strong value added enterprise and delivers quality products.

Not so.

Oh, go on, do tell!

I have four of the bloody things and I don't recall ever paying anything near $5K with import duty (to the US). Closer to list price of the TTIndustries gear box plus a few hundered import duty.

Would love to elaborate on prices for the various Seeley Mk2 combinations but in all fairness to all parties involved it really depends upon how much bling you want with your build and how much the bike owner is willing and able to self perform.

My 6 speed TTI box cost $5K, I sold a good TZ350G to buy it. I built the bike in 1978. The rolling Seeley chassis cost me $150 with tanks and ceriani forks. The motor cost $1300, carbs were about $500. The original 4 speed CR box cost $150, but $600 for the gear set after I raced it only once with standard ratios and found it revolting. Seat cost $150. I think my bike is worth about $25K (not for sale).
Like Kenny, I use two Lockheed calipers on the front. One came with the chassis, the other I swapped a small Amal GP carburetor for.
The bike was an easy build, all I had to do was make a set of aluminium engine plates and a front brace, and bolt all the bits together. I only ever built it because it had some sort of authenticity about it (similar to the Gus Kuhn Nortons), and it was a good thing to do. I didn't race it until 2002, simply because I did not believe in the 850 commando motor, and I still expect the explosion. I'm really careful to never rev it past 7,500 RPM. I think the commando engine is really amazing, my bike is really great to ride with it's superlight frame, and torquey engine. There are no hot bits in the motor, however it is still fast enough using methanol fuel and a home made two into one exhaust, a bit of minor porting and playing with the cam timing to compensate for the pipe help too.
'Some things are so bad, that they are good' ! ! !

If I was starting again, I would build this. It is the same frame that Slater of Bromwich, and Patrick Godet used for the Vincent motor. There was a similar rolling Egli chassis going for $1500 around here a few years ago. None of this stuff is rocket science. Just keep your eyes open and shop around :

A couple of years ago I was in one of our local bike wreckers in Shepparton, Victoria. He had a new looking Rickman frame for sale for $400. It looked too low to me, could have been for a two stroke. However they are around. You blokes in the states have much more opportunity to find this stuff than I have. If I wanted to build a fast Norton and I lived there , I would have my nose in all the old race shops/ dealerships, and wreckers. Keep your eyes open, and if you know who was racing in the old days, go and visit them and ask a few questions. The Mk3 Seeley frame which I used to build my bike was imported by an A grader who moved on to sponsored H2R Kawasakis before he got around to using it. A friend of mine built a Laverda 750 motor into it, raced it a couple of times, then sold it. The motor was then pulled apart for the hot-up job which never happened. I tracked after the bike for two years, and finally found it rotting in a suburban garage in Melbourne. I couldn't get the motor, so I bought the Mk2A 850 commando engine and gear box.
I hope this inspires some of you guys to have a go. My Seeley 850 was a great bike to build, and extremely rewarding - a big buzz ! And it is not so difficult if you work at it, you just have to get your heads straight about what you want to do. There is enough information on Kenny's web site, and on this forum to help you build a really exciting bike.
Incidentally, I am not an engineer or motorcycle mechanic, I am an industrial chemist. I've had bikes for 56 years, and I raced for about 12 years in the 60s and 70s. Most of my engineering has been $10 jobs in local workshops.

We've been over the cost of Kenny's scale of engine combo, a few years ago it'd cost 12 grand for parts and processing. With inflation and dialing in more like 15 grand fir a ready to run engine. Kenny is mostly spending his own dough but as business builds hope he can carry on. For 2500+ more for Comstock's EFI it'd blow lots of motorcycle doors off.

Not so.

OK. So I just dug out the invoice from three years ago for my 6 speed magnesium TT box.

At todays exchange rate it comes to US$5028.04

So yes it is so.

Maybe you got a deal with four of them. Or your tax is a lot less - I paid NZ GST at 12.5% . Have you check NZ/US rate lately. NZ $ has gone up 15 % against the US in last three years. My shipping cost was almost nil. Nelson to Wellington.

Its worth it. The best in the world.

I would have thought that someone could build most of a Seeley Commando racer for $15K, if a few secondhand parts were used. A complete bike should sell for about $25K, especially if there was a current active race class in which they played a major part. We don't have that in Australlia, however I just love to ride the bike, it has a really great feel to it. - Far better than any two stroke or four cylinder bike. What is more - it is SAFE !

If I was going to build another Seeley, I'd use this 500cc Jawa motor, instead of a Commando. There must be hundreds of them laying around in Europe, just as powerful and half the weight:
